Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) seeks a R&D Engineer to join our team in Kihei, HI to support the research and development of electro-optical systems at the Air Force Optical and Super-computing Site (AMOS) on Maui. This position will be a part of the Science & Analysis team working with Air Force researchers on a variety of Space Domain Awareness (SDA) related problems.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Support research efforts in imagery, photometry, and object detection at various orbits (LEO, GEO, Cislunar) using a wide variety of telescopes and sensors to include modeling, simulation, and data analysis.
  • Support maintenance and development of post-processing software and data pipelines.
  • Assist in defining and gathering optical sensor requirements from the Air Force customer and refine into coherent system requirements documents.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary scientific and engineering teams to implement the requirements into operational systems and verify system performance against the agreed upon requirements.
  • Support Air Force visiting experimenters as necessary to achieve mission goals.

To meet security standards and protocols, all work is performed onsite in Kihei, HI.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.  An interim or final U.S. secret clearance post start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 1&43; years using programming languages such as Python, Java, C, C&43;&43;, and MATLAB.
  • 1&43; years developing software models of physical systems and scientific phenomena.
  • Experience working with applied physics and math.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • PhD in mathematics or physics.
  • Knowledge of signal processing, skill in applied physics, applied mathematics, and software development.
  • Ability to develop software models of physical systems and scientific phenomena using UNIX/ LINUX and Windows environments.
  • Experience or education with ground based optical telescopes, electro-optical systems, sensors, lasers, and supercomputing platforms.
  • Knowledge of basic astronomy, photometry, estimation theory, development of parallel code, and orbital mechanics.

Typical Education & Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master&43;3 years related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
