Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) is looking to bring on an Airplane Configuration Design Manager for the Advanced Concepts Product Development team in Long Beach, California.

The selected candidate can apply expertise in Airplane Configuration Design, including broad knowledge of aerodynamics, systems engineering, structural design, propulsion, airplane systems, payloads, manufacturing, support and services, to lead the creation of highest value air vehicle configuration designs from customer and market requirements.  Advance the core competencies of airplane configuration design and analysis by developing the organizations skills, relationships, tools, and processes.  Serve as a member of the Configuration Design Engineer skill team and with the Airplane Configuration and Integration (AC&I) management team, find and acquire talent and develop skills and talent through assignment growth opportunities, mentorships, Leaders teaching Leaders, and other learning opportunities.  Act as Product Development Deputy Chief Engineer.  Advise and lead management and technical development of configuration design activities with other business units and Boeing subsidiaries.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manages employees performing airplane design, analysis, certification and production system activities in the areas of Flight Engineering.

  • Develops and executes project and process plans, implements policies and procedures and sets operational goals.

  • Acquires resources for projects and processes, provides technical management of suppliers and leads process improvements.

  • Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports.

  • Provide technical authority for airplane configuration design, and provide direction, and guidance to ensure Airplane Configuration and Integration (AC&I) products or processes meet customer, company, quality, safety, production system, industry and regulatory requirements.

  • Provides oversight and approval of technical approaches, products and processes.

  • Manages, develops and motivates employees.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.  

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in air vehicle design with commercial transport airplanes

  • 5+ years of years of experience leading cross-functional engineering teams in an aerospace product development environment

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):  

  • Experience in advanced concepts commercial aircraft design and leadership

  • Preferable education in any of the following majors: Aeronautical Engineering; Aerospace Engineering; Mechanical Engineering

  • With directly applicable leadership experience in at least one of the following: Air Transport Strategic Analysis, Airplane Conceptual Design Airplane Product Development Airplane Configuration Design and Integration Airplane Level Integrated Analysis.

  • Understanding of computer-aided design and analysis methods, model based engineering and model based systems engineering are beneficial.

Summary pay range:                $113,000 - $202,000
