Role Summary

The Director Fuel sets the long-term strategy and oversees the operational and financial performance of fuel for Alaska Airlines Group (AAG). As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for the fuel team to procure jet fuel to optimize cost and meet demands of the operation to ensure fuel availability and fueling services are performed in a safe and compliant manner.

Key Duties

  • Responsible for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air’s fuel operational performance, which includes the safe, reliable and efficient fueling of our aircraft; this position has authority for the contents of the Company Fueling Procedures Manual.

  • Oversees forecasting, inventory and distribution of the fuel, assuring operational readiness. Works with Airport Ops and Safety to ensure there is a sustainable and effective fuel program to meet regulatory requirements and implement best practices. Safety and compliance are the number one priority.

  • Responsible for into-plane business partner performance. Partners with station leaders to ensure there is an effective fueling vendor oversight program and that underperforming vendors are effectively managed. Communicates with station leadership and Safety to ensure alignment on fueling vendor performance.

  • Sets long-term procurement strategy for conventional jet fuel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)across Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air to achieve lowest total delivered cost, including bulk commodity price, transportation, handling and storage.

  • Provides an end-to-end single view on fuel, working cross divisionally to lead fuel initiatives.

  • Leads strategy development and execution of a fuel sourcing process that effectively balances the ongoing operational requirement for supply assurance with the financial objective to continually reduce costs and drive for optimum price advantage.

  • Develops strategies to increase leverage or strengthen key supplier relationships for price and other competitive advantages. Fosters competition when markets are underserved. Oversees RFP efforts for fuel supply and into-plane services.

  • Serves as a relationship leader with airport consortiums, suppliers, A4A committees, and other airlines to represent Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air and influence outcomes favorable to the company.

  • Responsible for internal control policies and enforcement that fuel-related invoices are received, validated and paid in a timely and accurate manner. Responsible for execution and compliance of all fuel-related contracts.

  • Takes a highly proactive leadership role when fueling issues arise, locally or nationally, to inform the Company (working with SOC, NOC and Flt Ops) of alternate plans when fuel disruption occurs. This includes timely and consistent communication throughout the situation.

  • Establishes effective oversight and reporting programs with storage operators to ensure accurate inventory is maintained to meet current and future operating demands. Understands and adheres to all applicable regulatory and compliance guidelines for fuel storage and servicing.

  • Develops people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, teaching the ability to think strategically, use critical-thinking, and to understand the fundamentals of our business.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 8 years of experience negotiating high-value contracts, with detailed financial analysis of complex vendor proposals, with program management or airport operations.

  • 5 years of leadership experience, with at least two of those years directly leading people.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Proven record of sustaining strong customer/supplier relationships.

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.

  • Excels in leading teams, facilitating meetings, and providing presentations.

  • Ability to build influence across departments and with external stakeholders to facilitate company strategies.

  • Enjoys challenging the status quo; pushes for thoughtful change.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with internal customers and suppliers to build positive relationships and achieve results.

  • Proven ability to drive change and process improvement.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Salary Range

$157,700 - $252,300 / year

Total Target Compensation Range (incl. bonus & equity)

197,210 - 325390

Salary Details

The pay range and total target compensation package listed above is the expected pay offered for this position at the start of employment. Your pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, your relevant experience/level, experience level, and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note: We dont typically hire at the top of the range.
