The Company employs test infrastructure unique to its scale aircraft, including whirl stands, propulsion stands, a hardware-in-the-loop / software-in-the-loop systems integration lab, and other unique infrastructure to accelerate the development of rotorcraft. The Company produces the tandem DP-6 Whisper and the tandem DP-12 Rhino. The Company has a team include rotorcraft, autonomy, software, robotics, avionics, and production engineers. Composite Technician START DATE: 15JAN10 or as agreed upon FINISH DATE: DPI seeks a fulltime permanent employee, but would contract through 15JUN10 or later as agreed upon LOCATION: Essington, PA (near Philadelphia, PA) HOURS: 8am to 4pm M-F and as needed on weekends and evenings to make deadlines PAY: DPI will pay market rates, i.e., for subcontractors up to $40 per hour for appropriate leadership / skill level

DESCRIPTION:
Dragonfly Pictures Inc. (DPI) is a leader in the development of innovative vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and is seeking a Composites Technician to build the next generation VTOL UAS products. DPI will hire a motivated and skilled self-starter who can complete challenging work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fabricate composite unmanned helicopters. Build carbon fiber and honeycomb parts using wet lay-up. Implement 5S System in Composite Lab. Help expand the physical space to handle more composite fabrication. Manage all parts, tools, raw materials, consumables, safety certifications, inventory, and tooling. Clean and organize 1500 square foot Composite Shop for low rate production and prototype fabrication. Create fabrication procedures and quality control for composite parts. Collaborate with an Aero-mechanical Engineer and two part-time Composite Technicians.

EXPERIENCE:

DPI seeks candidates with 5 years experience in related fields, e.g., home-built, commercial, or military aircraft, or high performance light-weight composite structures (e.g., sailboats).

REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate must bring the following skills: Fabricate parts with precision and care. Read work orders, blueprints, and specifications Create vacuum formed carbon, fiberglass, and honeycomb parts by hand Determine and document fabrication procedures and sequence of operations.

GOAL FOR FIRST TWO MONTHS:

The goals for the Composite Technician in the first two months are to:
    1. Modify existing tooling
    2. Learn existing wet lay-up process
    3. Establish low rate production for fuselage, fairing, and blades
    4. Build three fuselages of an unmanned helicopter that is 80 inches long
    5. Train a full time Composite Technician
    6. Build second set of tooling to increase production rate


DESIRED SKILLS:
The Candidate will need to bring or develop the following skills over the first two months:

  • Be able to accomplish repairs, modifications, Engineering Change Orders (ECO), etc, with very little to no assistance.
  • Use tech data and aircraft drawings to locate part numbers and accomplish repairs.
  • Perform maintenance in accordance with company and / or FAA approved technical data.
  • Research FAA technical data to locate applicable data relevant to assigned task.
  • Repair body or structure of aircraft according to specifications.
  • Reinstall repaired or replacement parts for riveting or welding, using clamps and wrenches.
  • Develop, writes, sketches, and compiles new processes to make them repeatable by others.
  • Locate and mark dimension and reference lines on defective or replacement part, using templates, scribes, compass, and steel rule.
  • Cure bonded structure, using portable curing equipment.
  • Communicate with other workers to fit and align parts or expedite processing of repair parts.
  • Clean, strip, prime, and sand structural surfaces and materials prior to bonding.
  • Removes or cuts out defective part or drills holes to gain access to internal defect or damage, using drill and punch.
  • Applicant must live and work in the Greater Philadelphia area.
  • Certifications, degrees, or equivalent experience in a related field required.
  • No formal degree required.
  • Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident, or designated a refugee or asylee under U.S. law.
  • Security Clearance a plus.
  • Basic Solidworks 2009 and Microsoft Office.
