Company Info: The Company has developed and produced tactical autonomous rotorcraft since 1992 for commercial and military customers. The Company‘s products range in gross weight from 50 to 2100 lbs. All of its products take-off vertically, deploy in <5 minutes, with two operators, can operate in the near-earth environment, don‘t require pilot-in-the-loop-skills, fit in common transports (e.g., pick-up truck), and are built to aerospace and NATO standards. The Company specializes in tandem and tail-sitter aircraft.

The Company employs test infrastructure unique to its scale aircraft, including whirl stands, propulsion stands, a hardware-in-the-loop / software-in-the-loop systems integration lab, and other unique infrastructure to accelerate the development of rotorcraft. The Company produces the tandem DP-6 Whisper and the tandem DP-12 Rhino. The Company has a team include rotorcraft, autonomy, software, robotics, avionics, and production engineers. The Company is located in Philadelphia, PA, the birthplace of US rotary-wing aviation.
Supported Manufacturers: The Company‘s customers include SOCOM, DARPA, Navy, Army, Air Force, Northrop, BAE Systems, and Boeing.

The Company is in low rate production with two Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). These are the DP-6 Whisper and the DP-12 Rhino. The Company is under contract to develop the DP-11 Bayonet VTOL UAS by the Navy.

Job Desc: FINISH DATE: DPI seeks a fulltime permanent employee, but would contract through 22JUN10 or later as agreed upon
HOURS: 8am to 4pm M-F or as agreed upon. Additional hours needed on weekends and evenings to make deadlines. Comp time available.

DESCRIPTION: Dragonfly Pictures Inc. (DPI) is a leader in the development of innovative vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and is seeking a Machinist to help build the next generation of VTOL UAS products. DPI will hire a motivated and skilled self-starter who can complete challenging work.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Machine components for unmanned helicopters. Code and operate CNC vertical mill and lathe from Solidworks models. Uphold 5S System in Machine Shop. Manage all parts, tools, raw materials, consumables, safety certifications, inventory, and tooling. Clean and organize 1600 square foot Machine Shop for low rate production. Do the following:
    1. Collaborate with Engineers to plan, prioritize, and machine components.
    2. Run CNC and manual machines such as but not limited to lathes and milling machines.
    3. Set-up, operate controls, and inspect parts for conformance to requirements.
    4. Study and interpret drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
    5. Measure and mark dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining.
    6. Communicate with Engineers, assembly, quality, test, and shop personnel for assignments
    7. Resolve machining or quality issues.
    8. Keep equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment.
    9. Build components into assemblies, install on aircraft.
    10. Execute repairs to assemblies, modifications, Engineering Change Orders (ECO), etc, with very little to no assistance.
    11. Use tech data and aircraft drawings to locate part numbers and accomplish repairs.
    12. Perform maintenance in accordance with company and / or FAA approved technical data.
    13. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.


EXPERIENCE: DPI seeks candidates with 5 years experience in related fields, e.g., home-built, commercial, RC aircraft, or military aircraft, or high performance light-weight machined structures (e.g., aircraft).

REQUIREMENTS: The candidate must bring the following skills:
  • Machine parts with precision and care
  • Read work orders, blueprints, and specifications
  • Program, run and maintain CNC Haas Lathe, CNC Hardinge Vertical Mill, manual vertical mill, manual lathe, and other machines
GOAL FOR FIRST TWO MONTHS: The goals for the Machinist in the first two months are to:
    1. Machine components for six shipsets
    2. Design and machine tooling and fixtures for low rate production
    3. Machine and assemble 12 rotorheads
    4. Inspect all parts machined by outside vendors
DESIRED SKILLS: The Candidate will need to bring or develop the following skills over the first two months:
    1. Bring ~5 years experience operating manual and CNC machines such as lathes and milling machines in a light manufacturing environment.
    2. Use precision measuring instruments and the application of such instruments. Instruments should include but not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators and scales.
    3. Work with drawings, specifications, geometric tolerancing and dimensions
    4. Work with cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines.
    5. Follow written and oral instructions.
    6. Communicate (both written and oral).
    7. Balance competing demands and deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
    8. Work when and as necessary to keep the aircraft off the ground.
    9. Must possess basic math skills to include but not limited to geometry and algebra for the purpose calculating material fabrication.

Certifications, degrees, or equivalent experience in a related field required. No formal degree required.
