Job Description:

Job Summary:

The Aircraft Battery Technician is responsible for managing, operating, maintaining, utilizing, and repairing various types of aircraft and non-aircraft battery systems and charging equipment. This includes handling nickel-cadmium, silver-zinc, and lead-acid batteries. The technician will ensure compliance with NASA instructions, aircraft technical manuals, and equipment manufacturer maintenance manuals. The role involves conducting on-the-job training (OJT) or having a minimum of four years of progressive experience in an aircraft battery lab.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Battery Management and Maintenance:

    • Operate, maintain, and repair aircraft nickel-cadmium, silver-zinc, and lead-acid batteries.
    • Manage and utilize government-provided battery equipment and charging systems for both aircraft and non-aircraft lead-acid batteries.
    • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of all battery charging stations and National Instruments DAQ cards in accordance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
  2. Quality and Safety:

    • Assist with shop quality and facility safety configurations.
    • Ensure technical and safety provisions are in place for existing or future shops.
    • Follow all applicable NASA instructions and technical manuals to safely service all assigned batteries.
  3. Data Management and Reporting:

    • Complete workbooks for all charging stations to ensure traceability.
    • Compile data for reporting usage frequency, maintenance cost, and obsolescence of laboratory equipment, tools, instruments, and batteries.
    • Maintain comprehensive computer and hard copy records on all equipment and batteries.
  4. Process Improvement:

    • Review current processes and provide input for new techniques or equipment upgrades to enhance capability, reduce costs, and improve shop efficiency.
  5. Coordination and Communication:

    • Coordinate with purchasing personnel to order, receive, serialize, and track non-aircraft lead-acid batteries.
    • Interface with NASA operations engineers and aircraft personnel to establish battery charging requirements and coordinate battery service and maintenance.
  6. Training and Cross-

    Training:

    • Cross-train in other contract duties as needed.
    • Provide cross-training to new employees and coworkers as assigned.
  7. Physical Requirements:

    • Stand for extended periods, stoop, bend, and lift batteries with assistance or lifting equipment.
  8. Compliance:

    • Undergo and pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.

Qualifications:

  • Solid understanding of aircraft battery and charging equipment electrical systems.
  • Ability to participate in on-the-job training (OJT) or have four years of progressive experience in an aircraft battery lab.
  • Familiarity with NASA instructions, aircraft technical manuals, and equipment manufacturer maintenance manuals.
  • Strong data management skills, including maintaining detailed records and compiling reports.
  • Excellent coordination and communication skills to interface with engineers, purchasing personnel, and aircraft personnel.
  • Ability to assist with quality and safety configurations in the shop.
  • Physical ability to stand, stoop, bend, and lift batteries with assistance or lifting equipment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with National Instruments DAQ cards and calibration processes.
  • Knowledge of safety and technical provisions for battery handling and maintenance.
  • Experience in process improvement and cost reduction strategies.
