In this role, you will be responsible for managing relations with key suppliers and internal customers to optimize selection, and integration of electric DC motors into various Garmin products. Other essential functions include:
•Managing Supplier Relations
•Perform worldwide survey of consumer grade motor manufacturers, and identify suppliers that can help design teams quickly and accurately select motors that meet class, cost, and performance requirements.
•Develop and manage relationships with suppliers that can support Garmin with off-the-shelf, and custom motor designs.
•Visit suppliers regularly so as to evaluate their capability to support Garmin with design questions and maintain quality standards.
•Work with suppliers on capabilities and technology roadmaps in order to align with Garmin’s needs
•Continually evaluate new motors and drive systems, and regularly communicate status to the Product Development Team and Management.
•Bring key suppliers on site to demonstrate capabilities to the larger Garmin team.
•Work closely with product development teams to understand design intent and help assess range of performance envelopes and costs to select the most appropriate motor.
•Help devise tests and procedures to quickly characterize and rule out motors amongst competing options during selection process.
•Be our go-to engineer for motor questions that come up during design.
•For projects that are not direct drive, help design team manage trade-offs associated with gear boxes in terms of cost, noise, performance, and space.
Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or another degree relevant for successful performance of the essential functions of this job description. Other requirements include:
•5+ years of industry experience in DC motor design, integration, or sourcing
•Understanding of gears, gear systems, gear geometries, materials, and surface finishes
•Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
•Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
