Director – Cloud and Platforms Engineering

Our team designs, develops and maintains massively scaling technology solutions brought to life with innovative architectures, data analytics, and digital solutions.

This role is highly visible leading enterprise initiatives and collaborating with diverse technology and business partners. This individual will direct activities for Cloud and Platforms Engineering & Enablement teams to enable and operationalize new services while providing consult to broader digital technology teams. They will deliver centralized operational support for cloud enablement initiatives, including FinOps, consult internal technology customers, and make decisions for the organization to positively affect how United Airlines consumes and interacts with major cloud providers. Responsibilities include:

• Direct, coordinate and prioritize the work of the Cloud and Platform Engineering teams to ensure domain is delivering on all stated objectives. Pivot as needed.
• Develop and implement policies for the use of cloud services, handling requests for new technology, establishing a secure cloud environment, and ensuring appropriate availability of services.
• Own the research, design, operationalization, and implementation of the technology platform and services to support strategic enterprise vision and design for cloud consumption.
• Collaborate with application development teams to advise and engineer secure innovative solutions enabling business transformation through cloud services.
• Partner with Cybersecurity & Digital Risk teams to drive a cyber-focused culture, ensure cybersecurity requirements are embedded in cloud and vulnerabilities are mitigated.
• Lead programs around monolithic technologies to drive retirement and/or transformation to the cloud.
• Stay abreast of current and emerging trends, uniquely United opportunities, and challenges to better serve digital technology and application teams.
• Leads the Center of Excellence, Cloud Steerco, and Cloud Architecture & Enablement teams.
• This position is hybrid based in Chicago with up to 25 travel required.

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field.
• 12 + Years of related experience in Cloud solutions Strategy and Implementation for mid or large size organizations (AWS, Azure or VMWare).
• 10+ years of IT experience leading technical staff and working across multiple technology teams.
• 5+ years leading technical teams supporting private/public cloud.
• Deep understanding of storage options, appropriate use cases and instances uses.
• Working understanding of security principles and technology for cloud implementations.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship.

• Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Cloud certifications a plus.
