LEAD FAIRING RECOVERY ENGINEER

Have you ever wanted to catch something falling out of the sky ... with a net ... on a boat ... thats moving and lead the team doing it? Well, this is your chance to take on one of the most unique engineering challenges SpaceX is currently tackling.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Responsible for the engineering team and operational readiness supporting fairing recovery

  • Lead fairing recovery missions and hardware. This includes, contracting vendors, creating cost estimates, developing and authoring field procedures, managing a team, and leading recovery operations in the field

  • Work to enhance vehicle reusability through operational gains and new innovative hardware. This includes identifying requirements, developing procedures, and working with several design and operations teams within SpaceX to ensure vehicles are processed quickly and efficiently to prep for reuse

  • Develop fairing recovery capabilities. This includes, planning concept of operations and designing ground support equipment

  • Process flown hardware. This includes identifying requirements, developing procedures, and working with several design and operations teams within SpaceX to ensure hardware are processed quickly and efficiently to prep for reuse

  • Gap fill resource shortages on other recovery operations which could include Falcon 9, crew Dragon, or cargo Dragon


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, naval, or marine engineering

  • 3+ years of experience building, maintaining, and modifying complex mechanical hardware

  • 3+ years of direct leadership experience


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Past offshore experience

  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining fluid systems and associated control hardware

  • Experience operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining large complex mechanical systems

  • Testing experience including setting test objectives, writing test plans, and executing hands-on testing

  • Experience operating and troubleshooting remote-operated ground control systems

  • Experience with critical operations where real-time decision making affected success criteria

  • Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers

  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

  • Self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail

  • Ongoing drive for continuous improvement in all aspects of work

  • Detail oriented, organized, and demonstrate a high sense of urgency


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Ability to support offshore operations averaging 7 or more days offshore per month

  • Comfortable supporting offshore operations and does not get debilitating sea-sickness

  • Ability to climb ladders and work in tight/confined spaces

  • Willing to work with hazardous materials

  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings, climbing hand over hand, and lifting 25 lbs.

  • Ability to work at elevated heights (up to 300 feet), including the use of ladders and lifts

  • Willing to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, wind, open ocean

  • Ability to work on offshore vessels for extended durations without access to emergency services normally available on shore

  • Must be willing to travel

  • Ability to operate heavy machinery

  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral

  • Position is subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing
