Job Summary

 

Under minimal direction, the Principal Engineer – Chemical Services manages, plans and coordinates chemical services activities to Chemical Milling and Chemical cleaning areas throughout the facility. Understanding, Maintaining, Monitoring, and Improving the Chemical Milling processes, Chemical Cleaning, and Hazardous Waste Management generated in the chemical milling and cleaning processes. 

Job Responsibilities

 

•    Researches, plans, conduct tests, monitor production processes, and prepares proposals for approval relative to the chemical milling solutions and processes. 
•    Ensures that the necessary applications, data/records, reports, and permits are submitted on time & maintained in accordance with all applicable regulatory requirements. 
•    Manages the Chemical Lab and the Waste Lab group as well as potentially Chemical Milling Engineers.
•    Ability to use calculus and other advanced math for analysis, design, problem-solving skills and troubleshooting in this field of work.
•    Must be able to anticipate and identify problems, such as those related to the manufacturing processes, and to devise solutions. 
•    Conduct chemical experiments and tests using chromatography, spectroscopy, physical and chemical separation techniques and microscopy.
•    Use laboratory equipment; prepare solutions of gas or liquid, reagents, and sample formulations.
•    Effectively manages all projects against cost, quality and schedule commitments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (Able to Perform, Teach, and Manage)

•    Studies on material removal and or etch rates on titanium and Inconel parts. 
•    Chemical Bath Samples daily along with lab analysis to determine bath chemistry is within specification ranges; check bath temperature. 
•    Calculate daily etch rates and perform bath additions in order to bring chemistry up to specifications  
•    Pumps spent tank solutions to neutralization holding tank. Rinses tanks; neutralize spent acid bath by operating procedures.
•    Hazardous waste generated in chemical milling process, including closing, weighing and transferring hazardous waste containers to the facility’s hazardous waste storage location. Comprehensive hazardous waste training will be required annually for those chemical mill operators engaged in hazardous waste management activities.
•    Pump spent tank solutions to neutralization holding tanks. Rinses tanks; neutralize spent acid bath by operating procedures. 
•    Perform inventory control of supplies
 

•    Ensures effective, timely communication both written and verbal to internal teams and external customers, contractors and agencies.
•    Establish safety procedures for working with dangerous chemicals. Ensuring the companys commitment to maintain a safe workplace and to protect the environment through the establishment and support of Company policy and adherence to various government regulations.
•    Fully complies with the "GKN Aerospace, Inc. Policy Statement on Contracting with the United States Government" in all areas of responsibility involving direct and indirect contracting with the United States Government.  
•    Performs other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
•    Manages emergency situations in relevant areas as well as support site if needed. 
•    Assists in the development and maintenance of a business culture, which supports the Companys overall business objectives and goals, by providing leadership in issues that involve “cost, quality, process, schedule and people”.

Required Qualifications:

 

•    Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
•    5 years of experience working with titanium alloys within an aerospace manufacturing environment
•    Completed Hazardous Chemical Safety Training (Hazwoper) or to be completed within six months.
•    Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident    

 

Preferred Qualifications:

•    An advanced degree desirable.
•    Familiar with EPA & OSHA requirements. 
•    Knowledge of the principles of Chemistry, applied mathematics, and applied physics to efficiently use and transform chemicals, matter, and energy. 
•    Must possess excellent interpersonal, leadership, organizational and communication skills.
•    Formal management training a plus. 
•    Ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate instructions in English 
•    Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
•    Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and specifications
•    May require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and or require periodic lifting up to 15lbs.
•    Ability to work in an environment with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes.
