Job Description:

Primary Purpose

To provide, as a service to Plant/Project Managers, specialist knowledge, support and advice as necessary, to enable them to comply with statutory legislation and requirements as defined in the Licence Conditions/Authorisation Conditions (LC/AC) relevant to nuclear related activities carried out by, or on behalf of the Plant/Project Manager. This post lies within the Nuclear Safety Engineering team.
Principal Tasks and Responsibilities
To prepare appropriate Hazard Identification and Safety Assessment documentation, as required by the Plant/Project Manager, relevant to specific Plant, Processes or Modifications, in accordance with agreed standards as determined by relevant Legislation, associated compliance documents and Company Guidance. Acceptable standards are judged by the relevant safety committee(s) followed by regulatory approval where appropriate.
To identify the need for remedial action or additional technical/safety justifications and agree with the DSM or P/SE the programme of work to be carried out.
To support other areas of the company by providing a quality check service to an agreed scope or area of expertise.
To be able to manage the construction, delivery and quality checking of appropriate Hazard Identification and Safety Assessment documentation against an agreed Safety Strategy utilising the Safety Engineering techniques as defined by the following processes and in accordance with agreed standards as determined by relevant legislation associated compliance documents and company guidance:
• Safety Strategy - SBU(D)-PM-177
• Hazard Identification and Sentencing – SBU(D)-PM-186
• Safety Assessment – SBU(D)-PM-187
• Risk Reduction – SBU(D)-PM-197

To ensure that any documentation produced covers the scope of operations, as defined by line management and agreed with relevant stakeholders, to timescales and standards that will allow continued operations. This will involve liaison as appropriate with P/SE, DSMs, Plant/Project Managers and any other relevant stakeholders (customer).
To provide advice to the Plant/Project Manager on the implementation and maintenance of safety cases and the implementation of LC/AC.
Provide guidance and advice to support Plant/Project Managers, P/SE, DSMs and the Head of Safety Engineering on Safety Case, Site Licence and MoD Authorisation issues, and to liaise with ONR, MoD, SRD/RSD, RRMP as appropriate.

Academic:

Level 6 STEM qualification, Or L5 qualification with substantial relevant experience.

Experience:

Experienced and skilled engineer who understands the concepts and principles in a generalist subject area designs, develops or contributes to determination of solutions to problems and issues in a generalist subject area.
Able to work on a range of engineering problems involving some complexity. Typically works independently and under occasional supervision, can refer to others or seek guidance for more unusual or complex problems and situations.
