OnsitePratt & Whitney is working to once again transform the future of flight—designing, building and servicing engines unlike any the world has ever seen. And because transformation begins from within, we’re seeking the people to drive it. So, calling all curious. Come ready to explore and you’ll find a place where your talent takes flight—beyond the borders of title, a country or your comfort zone. Bring your passion and commitment and we’ll welcome you into a tight-knit team that takes our mission personally. Channel your drive to make a difference into shaping an organization and an industry that’s evolving fast to the future.
At Pratt & Whitney, the difference you make is on display every day. Just look up. Are you ready to go beyond? What is my role type? In addition to transforming the future of flight, we are also transforming how and where we work. We’ve introduced role types to help you understand how you will operate in our blended work environment.
Pratt & Whitney is seeking a highly motivated individual to support the manufacturing maturation of ceramic matrix composite (CMC) turbine components. CMCs are an enabling material that increases the temperature capability of jet engine components. Through successful development and application of these materials, P&W will deliver engines that are more fuel efficient, lighter weight and more durable for commercial and military applications.
What You Will Do:
The Process Engineer, CMC Machining Engineers responsibilities include:
Developing and managing processes for machining ceramic matrix composites. This includes fixture and tool design, machine programming, material removal process parameters, and part cleaning after machining for turbine component applications.
Working closely with manufacturing and engineering integrated teams to develop new processes and implement new designs into production and to eliminate quality turn backs, escapes, and reduce overall product costs.
Play an active role in the Integrated Product Team process for CMC turbine components
Provide focused & effective leadership in eliminating EH&S/Ergonomics/Human Factors risks and addressing quality issues as processes transition into production.
Create and implement strategies for automation of the machining process.
Identify & implement shop floor process optimization, control methods, and work instructions (including specifications, engineering changes, QAD/process control, and tooling definition/requirements.)
Lead the strategy for comprehensive data collection and analysis from this process that will support robust process development and understanding as part of the digital thread for CMCs. This includes establishing methods for data collection, data analysis and data visualization to enable statistical process control (SPC)
Establish metrics for the process including yield, cost, cycle time, capacity, safety, delivery etc. Monitor outcomes to identify and implement improvement opportunities
Lead the initiative to advance the CMC Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) and support hardware production for Technology Readiness Level (TRL) demonstration
Conduct root cause investigations as required and implement corrective actions
Training of engineers and technicians
Monitor and improve OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) through implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) practices

Experience operating CNC or manual machines to machine polymer, metal or ceramic matrix composites
A working-knowledge of quality and process improvement tools such as Six Sigma and LEAN
Basic proficiency in CAD or solid modeling software & ability to create CNC machine instructions (G-code)
Working knowledge of tool design, fixture design and dimensional inspection approaches
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings including Geometrical Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
Ability to independently create all fixtures, tools, programs required to machine a part including operating the machine
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships and exercise influence
Ability to lead small teams to deliver outstanding results and overcome challenges
