The Materials and Process Engineering Department, which functions within Mechanical Engineering, is looking for a Materials Engineer to join our team in Andover, MA. This role is to support program hardware design and development and production activities. A qualified candidate will have a background and experience in metallurgy and evaluating materials and processes used within a product design and/or manufacturing. This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to support material selections during design, development, and manufacturing of hardware, and support failure analysis activities associated with a wide range of product applications. The role will involve evaluation of a variety of materials, with a focus on metals and coatings, and validation and verification that materials and processes used on product meet design and program requirements. Tasks will require critical thinking to solve challenging problems and careful attention to detail on procedures and documentation of results. Collaboration with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. A candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements.
What You Will Do:
Evaluation of materials and processes based on conformance to specifications and design and performance requirements
Working closely with design personnel in the selection and approval of materials and finishes in new and updated designs
Supporting product production and supplier support activities
Providing evaluation and resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processes
Participate in analysis and documentation of technical positions for alternate materials, obsolescence, and failure analysis
Ensure labor costs and estimated completion schedules provided by the Materials and Process Engineering Sections are negotiated, understood, and meet product/program commitments
The Senior Materials Engineer job is in Andover, MA and the position is onsite.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Metallurgy and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience. In absence of a degree, 9+ years of experience. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience
Experience in metal alloy systems (i.e. Aluminum, Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel, Corrosion Resistant Steel, High Temperature Materials, and Specialty Alloys)
Experience in metal manufacturing methods (i.e. Casting, Forging, Mill Products, Heat Treatment, Furnace Brazing, Additive Manufacturing)
The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer:
Experience working on programs, projects, or products associated with the Defense Industry
Experience working with engineering drawings
Experience in working with metals in design and development (material selections) and/or evaluation of metals for use in products
Experience working with and evaluation of suppliers performing special manufacturing processes
Experience with common industry standards for metals and metal manufacturing including Aerospace Materials Specifications, American Welding Society, and ASTM International.
Experience with corrosion fundamentals and mitigation techniques
Experience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods and characterization techniques
Experience related to Material Review Boards, Material and Process Change Boards, Risk Boards, and Engineering Review Boards
Experience with project milestones such as preliminary design reviews and critical design reviews
Earned Valued certification or experience
Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses
Demonstrated ability to lead and complete scientific based projects including failure analysis and obsolescence investigations
Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Strong communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skills
ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers from diverse communities and cultures
Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues who represent a diversity of work and conflict resolution styles

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
