We are seeking a self-starting, motivated Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our dedicated Southern California field engineering team. The team designs, develops, tests, delivers, and operates advanced prototypes and unique marine systems.
What You’ll Get To Do:
The candidate will have the opportunity to support a variety of unique mechanical equipment designed for marine applications. This involves a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines including mechanical design; structural analysis; thermal analysis; pressure vessels; material selection; hydraulic and pneumatic system design, component selection, troubleshooting and repair; and metallic and non-metallic fabrication techniques that will leverage the candidates existing skills and challenge them to develop new skills. Candidate will apply advanced knowledge of design and analysis tools and employ the application of general standards, principals, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform tasks.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Structural analysis/FEA on mechanical structures
- Innovate conceptual designs involving hydraulics, pneumatics, structures, and/or mechanisms per customer and mission requirements
- Design for manufacturability and maintainability
- Execute through conceptual design, mechanical analysis of the design, detailed drawing creation, and system installation while managing cost, scope, and schedule of the design
- Select and analyze material for strength, weight efficiency, and corrosion considerations
- Write documentation for production and maintenance procedures
- Support design through system installation, testing, operation, and training
- Analyze and derive requirements

Basic Qualifications for Staff Mechanical Engineer:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM related field and a minimum of 12 years related experience. Or a Master’s Degree in a STEM related field and a minimum of 10 years related experience.
- Experience with 3D CAD model-based software, analysis tools, and understanding of GD&T
- Experience with MS Office suite tools
- Active Top Secret clearance with ability to obtain SCI and PAR (program access request) eligibility
- Proven background in mechanical design and FEA analysis
Preferred Qualifications:
- SolidWorks 3D CAD software with simulation experience
- Marine environment engineering experience
- Experienced with textbook calculations and finite element analysis
- Experience with cranes and weight handling equipment
- Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic design, component selection, and troubleshooting
- Strong technical writing skills and technical presentation skills, effective verbal and written communication
- Strong teamwork skills with both immediate team and customer counterparts
- Desire to deploy with customer on a rotational basis
- Experience taking a design through its entire life cycle from requirements development through concept creation, detailed design, analysis, engineering release, build, and implementation
Salary Range: $155,500 - $233,300
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
