At Northrop Grumman, our employees have incredible opportunities to work on revolutionary systems that impact peoples lives around the world today, and for generations to come. Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nations history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, theyre making history.

Today’s dynamic global security threats require solutions both big and small – solutions living within the Northrop Grumman Microelectronics Center (NGMC). Boasting state-of-the-art design capabilities, multiple processing nodes, electrical testing, environmental and QCI screening, and failure analysis, the NGMC is a leader in designing, fabricating, packaging, and delivering discriminating microelectronics to the military, aerospace, and commercial markets.   For more than 70 years, we have been offering a wide range of trusted foundry and semiconductor services that deliver high-performing and reliable microelectronics. Our wide breadth of technologies and capabilities allows us to provide our customers with unique “More than Moore” solutions.

One of our most challenging new fields is Microelectronics Design and Applications (MDA), which combines the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop radical new energy-efficient computing systems. Our team is chartered with providing the skills to transform computing beyond Moore’s Law, advancing the development of computer architectures, processing/memory subsystems, and large-scale high-performance computing systems. MDA is seeking a Staff RF MMIC Design Engineer with demonstrated ability to support our innovative MDA team in support of emerging supercomputing technologies.

What You’ll get to Do:

Superconducting electronics form the core of our technology, with a focus on energy-efficient computation using our patented superconducting digital logic technology, Reciprocal Quantum Logic (RQL). On a gate-for-gate basis, RQL consumes orders of magnitude less power than CMOS while running at significantly higher clock speeds. As an RF Design Engineer on our team, you’ll work alongside physicists, circuit design engineers, and superconducting foundry engineers to develop these technologies into reality. Related job functions include:

  • Manage, enhance, and maintain high-frequency simulation and Multiphysics software tools such as ANSYS (HFSS/Maxwell3D), ADS (Momentum), COMSOL, etc.
  • Work with SMEs, product owners, and other team members to develop, document, and propagate best practices.
  • Develop execution plans and advocate for the implementation of tools for identified simulation needs.
  • Coordinate between different teams and programs to identify problems and provide solutions.

This position is contingent on clearance.

This position will serve on-site in Linthicum/ Annapolis Junction, MD.

Staff RF MMIC Design Engineer Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field, with 14 years of experience, or MS degree with 12 years of experience, or PhD with 9+ years of experience in RF, Analog, Digital or Mixed Signal Circuit design.
  • 7+ years of direct circuit design and simulation experience in a variety of technology nodes.
  • Design and simulation experience with a proven record of successful tape-outs; ability to design sub-blocks and perform chip-level integration.
  • Mastery of the fundamentals of multi-layer computer chip fabrication processes and chip design layout.
  • Proficiency with Cadence Virtuoso or similar IC design software.
  • Working knowledge of the IC design flow including schematic capture, simulation, and layout.
  • Strong understanding of RF network, and resonator transmission line theory.
  • Microwave engineering background; understanding of s-parameters and impedance matching techniques.
  • 2D and 3D Electromagnetic modeling background with commercial tools such as ANSYS (HFSS/Maxwell3D), COMSOL, Momentum, etc.
  • Understanding of fundamental principles of finite elemental analysis.
  • Experience debugging and validating simulations in the above tools.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple teams to supervise simulation tool development, verification, and interpret comparisons against test results.
  • Able to obtain and maintain TS/SCI Clearance with CI Polygraph. US Citizenship is a requirement for this.

Staff RF MMIC Design Engineer Preferred Qualifications:

  • Analog/RF, EMI/EMC PI signal integrity experience.
  • An interest in superconductivity and advanced computing technology.
  • Fabrication/Foundry 3D EM simulation and validation.
  • Design of passive and active RF circuits.
  • Experience implementing filters and low noise techniques for noise-critical blocks such as LNAs and mixers.
  • Proficient use of commercial tools for predicting the analysis of non-linear circuits mixing and crosstalk behaviors.
  • Proficient use of at least one of the following software for linear and nonlinear circuit characterization: ANSYS (HFSS/Maxwell3D), ADS (Momentum), COMSOL, etc.
