Medical Flight Escort Nurse

General Responsibilities

Responsible for providing medical care for patients requiring transport by air via a Commercial Airline. The Medical Escort is responsible to provide care in accordance with AirMed 360 Repatriation Directives.

Specific Duties

  • On advisement of a repatriation, collaborates with the trip organizer to determine that the air medical transport is organized appropriately and obtains further information as required. Plans initial in-flight care and may request that further stabilization steps be taken by the referring facility if required. Ensures all necessary medical equipment and medication is present in the Kit.
  • Arrives at the airport a minimum of 2 hours prior to the scheduled departure, dressed in the appropriate attire.
  • Go to location of Patient, either in Hospital or at a residence/hotel to assess pt. If your arrival into pick-up city is after 8 pm local, contact patient at hotel/residence or hospital by telephone and advise patient/family of plan of action for repat. Physically go to see patient first thing the following morning.
  • On arrival at the referring facility, ensure that a thorough patient assessment is completed, and that other information / data is collected as is necessary for the patient assessment and care. Communicates effectively and with compassion with patient and family. Prepares the patient for transport.
  • Communicates patient care plan with trip organizer to ensure that land ambulance / transportation arrangements are being made appropriately. Ensures patient needs can be met on the aircraft. Keeps the trip organizer updated regarding progress of medevac.
  • Ensures patient / stretcher is secured, pre-flight vital signs are taken, and patient is stable prior to take-off. Provides reassurance to patient and family prior to and during transport.
  • Works effectively and collaboratively with all other aviation members to provide care to the patient as may be required.
  • Records all medical information on the AirMed 360 forms as well as within the electronic patient record.
  • Provides assessment and interventions (in-flight vital signs, etc.)
  • In ALL situations, attempts to contact AirMed 360’s Medical Director in order to obtain direction in regard to the care of the patient in emergency situations.
  • Shall continue to be responsible for the patients care until the patient arrives at the receiving facility and the patients care has been transferred to a qualified RN or MD or if directed by the trip organizer, to the patients home.
  • Ensures that the receiving facility nurse or physician receives a copy of the AirMed 360 Medical Notes and a concise report, including a brief history of the patients medical problem and detailed information of the nursing care provided during the repatriation. Will pass on any nursing notes, X-rays, laboratory specimens or any other material from the referring facility to the receiving facility.
  • Ensures that the patient and family and any non-medical escort are introduced to the receiving facility personnel. Ensures that all patients family and non-medical escorts personal belongings have been transferred to the receiving facility or patients home.
  • Completes all documentation and billing forms.

POLICY
This serves to document the steps necessary for certification for all flight staff new to AirMed
360. This process is to ensure that all new flight staff meet the high level of cognitive and
skill levels that are expected of current flight staff. This process describes distinct guidelines
for certification in conjunction with existing certification.

INITIAL CERTIFICATION PROCESS

Eligibility:

The flight staff must be eligible for employment and in good standing within their recognized profession.

Education Verification:

  • The staff member shall provide evidence of graduation from a recognized health education facility.
  • If above is not applicable, the flight staff must provide AirMed 360 with equivalency documentation. Following submission, the flight staff will enter our initial certification process.

Provincial Exam:

The flight staff will provide evidence of successful completion of the provincial / State examination for their appropriate level (where applicable. A new flight staff member may be provisionally certified under the jurisdiction of the Medical Director pending the successful completion of the initial certification process.

Evaluation/Orientation:

AirMed 360 will arrange for an evaluation, which may use written, scenario-based and/or oral examinations with the Medical Director and/or designate. Orientation to policies, procedures and medical directives will also take place during this evaluation.

Provisional Certification:

Upon review of documentation received and orientation/evaluation, the Medical Director may recommend “Provisional Certification” pending completion of further clinical or field orientation.

Final Certification:

After completion of the initial certification process, the Medical Director will render a decision whether to certify the flight staff.
