Boeing Commercial Airplanes has an exciting opportunity for an Inspector Machining & Fabrication B to join our quality assurance team in Portland, OR.

Inspectors in this position perform dimensional inspections of raw stock, fabricated parts, vendor parts, assemblies and tooling for conformance with applicable drawings, specifications, quality standards, manufacturing plans and for workmanship, documenting any non-conformance.

Employees will perform inspection of tooling, verify software/hardware used for numerically controlled PME (Precision Measuring Equipment), and may have Material Review Board authority to validate and process Rejection Tags per MRB dispositions. Inspectors will perform audit/surveillance of all processes as required and may provide instruction and OJT for lower graded employees.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analyze area inspection requirements and assign work based on inspection flow and resources.

  • Use trigonometry, handbook formulae, blueprints, test equip., PME , and any documentation required to accomplish job assignments.

  • Work with lower graded employees to provide solutions to problems with parts and processes.

  • Determine sequence of and coordinate work.

  • Troubleshoot problems and develop plans to resolve issues.

  • Write processes to facilitate inspection flow and specification implementation.

  • Provide assistance and instruction to inspectors on drawing/specification interpretation, problem identification, investigation skills, computing skills and other policies and procedures, as required.

  • Verify paperwork is complete, accurate and up to date.

  • Ensure current revisions of drawings, Engineering Quick Change and other documents are being used by the shop and inspection.

  • Process and monitor non-conforming parts/assemblies in appropriate area with supporting documentation, identifying rejection number with parts.

  • Monitor process for non-conforming parts/assemblies is consistent with Quality Operating Instructions (QOI).

  • Monitor the routing of parts/assemblies with appropriate paperwork.

  • Coordinate and work with internal/external organizations (e.g., engineering, planning, suppliers) to provide clarification and/or additional information.

  • Ensure that tools used by the shop have been approved by performing tooling inspections.

  • Perform dimensional inspection of parts/assemblies using the appropriate precision measuring tools/NC (Numerically Contolled) measuring machines and reject discrepant parts/assemblies.

  • Perform in-process inspections (e.g., paint, alodine), audits, heat treat inspections, and visual weld inspections, as required.

  • Assist in laying out parts/assemblies and determine and monitor inspection certification requirements for the area.

  • Inspect operation of installations.

  • Ensure certifications of tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers), equipment and personnel are current.

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in approved manner.

  • Consult with management and/or others (e.g., production, engineering, planning) on process or job related issues.

  • Communicate with other organizations and provide status to supervisor and leads on other shifts.

This position is expected to be 100 onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • 1&43; years experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications (e.g., blueprint/schematic reading, specification, change, design).
  • 1&43; years of experience using software applications for internet navigation, email, Microsoft Suite and/or other specialized computer applications.
  • 1&43; years experience in setting and using precision measuring tools and equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and/or dial indicators.
  • Ability to walk constantly throughout the workday; stand 6-8 hours per day; climb or work from stairs/steps up to 8 hours per day; climb ladders; bend and twist frequently up to six hours per day; squat and kneel.
  • Experience as a Quality Inspector.   
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • 1&43; years experience conducting Inspections using ASME Standards for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T).
  • 1&43; years experience calibrating and/or using coordinate measurement machines, laser trackers, and/or optical measurement devices.

Required Education:

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Summary pay range: $27.50/hour - $46.58/hour
