Job Summary:
To operate sewing machine to sew a variety of upholstery items. Operator must cut and prepare a variety
of materials in preparation of operating the sewing machine. May be required to assist lower grade
operators.
Job Responsibilities:
• Operates sewing machine for binding edges, sewing seams, topstitch, blind stitch, installing
zippers and sewing a variety of materials and upholstery items including insulation, headliner,
windlace, carpeting, side panels, seating, curtains, skirts, spare seat belt straps, fireblocking,
inserts, and, on occasion, reworking chairs or making covers for parts. Works from department
schedules, sewing assembly records and oral and written instructions.
• Care must be taken to match weave and pattern before sewing.
• Ensures machine is in proper adjustment prior to sewing.
• Installs padding, beading and muslin in upholstery items as required.
• May be required to design and develop shop aids or other various items as requested by
supervision.
• Required to select supplies such as tape, thread, and bobbin according to specifications and
color of fabric.
• Uses simple hand tools including scissors, pliers, or screw drivers to perform minor machine
maintenance such as oiling machine and changing needles.
• May be required to maintain record of all items sewn.
• Responsible only for own work.
• Performs other related duties as required.
