Duties

The Materials Expediter expedites stock selection, receipt, issue, packaging, and delivery of urgently needed-parts and materials to satisfy priority requests received from the FAA Logistics Center worldwide customers.

Selects property from all areas of the warehouse or outlying stockrooms to satisfy priority requests for material during normal and non-normal duty hours. Responsible for contacting ordering facility to determine if callbacks are required. Responsible for contacting inventory managers, equipment specialists, and shop personnel to have item procured or repaired. Performs item identification research as required when requested item is not identified with a catalog number, not stocked by catalog number, or catalog number and nomenclature do not agree with item in stock. Performs computer inventory file research to determine if stock should be available when warehouse refusal received. Performs research to determine if substitute or interchangeable item or next higher assembly is available.

Processes confirming issue documents for shop repaired assets and inventory freeze assets to assure accurate and timely updating of the Logistics Center inventory records and voucher control registers. Accomplishes material receipt, inspection, storage, preservation, distribution, issue, stock maintenance, physical inventory, and provides proper packaging on all incoming and outgoing shipments in support of the F&E National Airspace System and FAA National Programs. Coordinates with Supervisor and/or Work Leader on problems that have occurred or may occur. May make recommendations for improvement of working procedures.

Provides leadership and assistance in training lower grade personnel in procedures for storage, issuing, and packing all requisitions. Independently operates all Government Furnished Equipment including the MINI AS/RS (Automated Storage & Retrieval System). Maintains supplies in immediate work area and utilizes equipment for the assigned task.

Required to operate up to a 2 1/2 ton truck for the purpose of pickup and delivery of priority shipments to and from the air terminals, motor freight terminals, post office, bus station, etc. Required to operate forklifts up to 20,000 pounds for the purpose of handling material to accomplish assigned tasks. Responsible for weighing, labeling, and annotating the necessary information on shipping documents.

Performs critical preservation and packaging of special priority items which requires extensive and varied knowledge of appropriate preservation packing techniques and assuring that the final package is consistent with item protection and quality is acceptable. Knowledge of hazardous material codes in compliance with title 49 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) for the packing and shipping of material is required.

Routes priority shipments via GBL (Government Bill of Lading) by determining the most appropriate and economical rate via air, motor freight, express, water or parcel post on outgoing shipments during non-normal duty hours. Updates computer shipping status records.

Performs housekeeping duties consisting of sweeping, cutting up and removing empty boxes and old pallets, picking up paper and emptying trash to maintain work in a clean, presentable fashion.

Receives administrative and technical supervision from the Supervisor and/or Work Leader, who furnish policy and procedure guidance. Work is reviewed on the basis of effectiveness and ability to maintain an orderly flow of material and initiative displayed in expediting actions on priority needs.

Works any shift as required, to accomplish assigned duties. May be required to work weekends, holidays, alternate days off and be subject to callback when advised by management. May also be required to utilize communication devices (i.e. pagers) to assure immediate notification.
