Job Description SummaryAMBER is an GE Aerospace Engineering Division hybrid electric demonstration program under Avio Aero co-ordination, and it will focus on fuel cell technology maturation and their implementation in a future regional Turboprop application. AMBER is supported by Clean Aviation and complementary national external funding across Europe, especially LuFo program in Germany and MISE in Italy. Aim of the AMBER program is to mature the critical technology element of the architecture (fuel cells, thermal management system, supervisory hierarchical controls) up to their demonstration in a full propulsion system ground test and prepare for following flight demo.

The Combining Gearbox Module & Mechanical Systems Module Leader will coordinate and lead the development and validation of the Combining Gearbox Module and of the Mechanical System components for the AMBER demo program.
Module leader is accountable to define and coordinate the activities performed by supporting organizations in order to achieve and balance the key program CTQs of safety, schedule, performance, life/weight/cost, and NRE.
The position reports to NTI Programs & New Initiatives Systems Engineering Leader within External Customer NPI Engineering Section.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

The AMBER Combining Gearbox & Mechanical System Module Leader will develop practical and innovative ways to identify and meet goals.  She/he will be responsible to develop and execute objectives for self and others and have the ability to affect short-term and some long-term business goals.

She/he is accountable for: (i) the coordination and development of the Combining Gearbox and MS components in strong collaboration with other sites and functions in order to meet overall product and business requirements,(ii) at module and components level for: module level integration and components design definition, manufacturing support, module and component testing, validation deliverables, development problems resolution.

In this role she/he:

  • Manages complex issues within functional areas of expertise, leads short/medium term activities and is involved in long-term planning and contributes to the overall product strategy.

  • Manage engine technical requirements and optimizations to assure the most well-balanced modules design. Deploys design requirements to module designer and Hardware Owners, Contributes to the conceptual definition of possible design variants, defines and executes module level trade studies.

  • Performs technical planning, components integration, verification and validation, cost and risk for the modules under his responsibility. Ensures on-time, on-quality execution of design reviews preparation, performs module level risk assessment and contributes to mechanical system safety analyses

  • Monitor and communicate project status as appropriate to the External Customer NPI Engineering Leader and Chief Engineers

  • Interfaces with all involved engineering disciplines and functions ensuring alignment to quality, cost and schedule targets. Leads ICD preparation workflow and ensure proper check and signature applies among parties.  Coordinates design team during recurrent progress meetings. Ensures compliance to internal design requirements (DP checklists) and closure of DR action items. Ensures on-time issuing of the detail design drawings

  • Maintains and adapt the Gearboxes and Mechanical System program plan aligned with the engine program schedule, resource schedules, and other program constraints. Executes module level risk assessment, Leads recurrent meetings to monitor design execution and keep design team aligned on program goals. Keeps module design RAIL (Rolling Action Items List) up-to-date. Ensures on-time, on-cost, on-quality hardware delivery

  • Support other engineering functions, particularly the Certification Office, Sourcing, Quality, and Manufacturing Programs.

  • Ensure a rigorous process is followed in the execution of Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action of product and process issues including system level testing

  • Provide leadership with high integrity and oversight of processes protecting Intellectual Property, Export Controlled and Strategic Technology. Proactive approach required, lead by example

  • Ensure the proper compliance to the verification requirements and, where applicable, verify verification documents produced by the design organization.  Defines acceptance tests, tech mat tests, risk mitigation tests, design assurance tests

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited university or college is preferred.

  • Experience in product development of engine systems or modules preferably in New Product Introduction programs

  • Knowledge of gearboxes and mechanical system technical requirements, design solutions and technologies

  • Good interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills

  • Proven effectiveness working in a global environment

  • Clear thinking and diligent approach

  • English and Italian language fluent knowledge, both written and oral

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Work Visa, according to local regulartion, is required
