TASK DESCRIPTION:

 

Aircraft Mechanic I (23021): Aircraft Mechanics I must have a combination of experience to repair engines, sheet metal, structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty, required to meet the assigned missions. Makes repairs to aircraft and follows direction of higher graded workers. The Aircraft Mechanic I troubleshoots malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti- icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems. This mechanic repairs, replaces, and rebuilds aircraft structures, such as wings and fuselage, and functional components including rigging, surface controls, and plumbing and hydraulic units, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake, welding equipment, rivet gun, and drills. This worker reads and interprets manufacturers and airlines maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components. Work involves replacing or repairing worn or damaged components, such as carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, and engine mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment; removing engine from aircraft, using hoist or forklift truck, disassembling and inspecting parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, and repairing or replacing defective engine parts and reassembles and installs engine in aircraft. Job duties require that this mechanic adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring system and aircraft accessories, performs preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections, performs miscellaneous duties to service aircraft, including flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes. Supervises the jacking and towing of aircraft, enters in the maintenance records description of the work performed and verifies the work was performed satisfactorily, service engines and airframe components at line station making repairs, short of overhaul, required to keep aircraft in safe operating condition, specialize in work, repair and modification of structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies, and specialize in engine repair. May be required to be licensed by Federal Aviation Administration. May require specialization in sheet-metal, electric work, avionics or other aircraft systems related disciplines. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licensing of contractor employee technical proficiency is not required.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:


- All Aircraft Mechanic Is must have Aviation Mechanic Experience and not just general maintenance experience.

 

TASK REQUIREMENTS

 

  • CNC and Manual Machining.
  • Typically works from blueprints, technical data and/or engineering specifications, 3-D models, incorporates Aircraft service changes and other technical directives.
  • Repairs, modifies, fabricates and fits aircraft metal structures. Performs precision handwork to fit, finish machined items.
  • Utilizes universal machines to perform the work required to accomplish technical directives.
  • Sets up and operates special and universal/ CNC machines and their accessories to perform complex machining tasks to aircraft components and their structures.
  • Programs and models utilizing CAD/CAM software.
  • Selects appropriate tool paths, cutting tools, installs and aligns the tool to the workpiece to accommodate precision specifications as required by blueprint and/or technical data.
  • Machines aircraft structures and components to tolerances of .0005” or less.
  • Uses conventional measuring tools such as micrometers, precision indicators, depth gauges, height gauges, inside micrometers, bore gauges, and others required by the job.
  • Uses available equipment to manufacture bushings, tubs, straps, angles, and radii in accordance with a blueprint and/ or technical directive specifications.
  • Typically works from blueprints, technical data, IPB, MIMS, SRM manuals, written instructions, and verbal directives.
  • Performs bench and floor assembly of complex components consisting of machine parts that require precision alignment.
  • Frequently lays out work to drill, ream, and bore holes to repair modify and rework aircraft structural parts to restore, condition, or incorporate an aircraft change.
  • Removes and installs helicoils, keenserts, rosans, and other fastener devices. 
  • Typical work is “one-off” single job parts however there will be occasions that require full production runs.
  • Uses shop mathematics to make all calculations as needed.
  • Uses universal machines such as engine lathes, turret and vertical turret lathes, shapers, general purpose milling machines, CNC vertical mills, CNC lathes, Wire EDM, to include 5-Axis tables capable of being set up to perform many different types of work and grinders capable of both external and internal grinding.
  • Supervised by a QAR/ Machinist crew leader for new procedures or special problems.
  • Works independently with little or no supervision.
  • Responsible for the quality and accuracy of his/her own work and for the work of other employees of the same trade who may be assigned by the supervision to assist the Machinist.
  • Complies with accepted safety practices and procedures.
  • May be required to use heavy exertion for short periods of time.
  • Work requires standing, kneeling, crouching, stooping and/ or working in strained and awkward positions.
  • Work requires hand and eye coordination.
  • Required to work closely with and be supervised by Active Duty military personnel.
  • Technical Dire ctive compliance and modific ations.
  • Perform general housekeeping and organization of workstation(s), shop(s), maintenance facility to provide a clean, safe, and FOD free environment.
  • Perform shift work and/or overtime as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten or more years Manual Machinist experience.
  • Seven or more years Computer Numerical Control (CNC) experience.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Navy Machinery Repairman (MR) “A” school or civilian equivalent.
  • Must be able to read and work from blueprints, 3-D models, technical data, manufacture specifications, sketches, sample parts, templates, jigs, and fixtures, written and verbal instructions.
  • Must have broad trade knowledge of mechanical principles, standard shop practices and special techniques in the machinist trade.
  • Must possess the ability to set up and operate several types of machinery and and be capable of machining aircraft structures and component to tolerances of .0005” or less.
  • Must have a good working knowledge on aircraft materials including tool steels, titanium, aluminum, brass, copper, and non-metals.
  • Incumbent is required to be aware of machining effect on heat treatment of materials and, conversely the effect of heat treatment on materials.
  • Must be able to designate the type, size and peculiar characteristics of special tool required to do complex tasks in the trade.
  • Knowledge of Mastercam or similar programs and Fanuc G-code required.
  • Must be able to operate all machines ensuring safety of user and safety of all within work area.
  • Must comply with accepted safety practices and procedures.
  • Full physical capability is required for this position and employee may be required to pass a physical exam to ensure they are physically able to perform duties without hazard to themselves or others.
  • Must be able to lift regularly up to 35 pounds.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift weights over 45 pounds; however dollies, hoists, hand trucks, etc. are available.
  • Must be familiar with the removal and installation of helicoils, keenserts, rosans, and other fastener devices. 
  • Employee must be able to work long hours in excess of eight hours per day and forty hours per week.
  • Must be able to work 1st or 2nd shift or as required.
  • All Contractors are required to have a Common Access Card (CAC) and shall be required to pass the equivalent of a trustworthy National Agency Check plus Written Inquiries with Credit Check (NACI), IAW DTM-08-003 “Next Generation Common Access Card (CAC) Implementation Guidance”, or latest guidance, prior to being allowed to work under task order PWS.

Compensation

$33.73/hour

 

Other Compensation

Employees who opt out of health insurance coverage receive $50.00 on a bi-weekly basis.

Employees are offered medical, dental, vision, and life insurance at 1x base salary. Employees are able to enroll in KAI’s 401k plan.  Employees accrue 4.62 hours of PTO per pay period. KAI employees at the Army National Guard Base in Fresno, CA receive 11 paid holidays.

 

Employment is contingent on (a) your ability to provide appropriate proof of your identity and eligibility to work in the United States; (b) your references and any background check being satisfactory to the Company; (c) you successfully passing a pre-employment drug test; and (d) your ability to get a required clearance by your effective start date, if needed; and (e) KAI commencing performance on this contract.
