Position Summary

The Chief Quality Inspector is responsible to the Director of Maintenance for the overall operation of the Quality Control Department and, as such, has the final authority in the releasing to service of airframes, engines, propellers, appliances, and the component parts thereof. In addition, the Chief Quality Inspector is responsible for directing, planning and laying out the details of the inspection standards, methods, and procedures used by the Repair Station in complying with all applicable Federal Aviation Regulations, and manufacturers specifications and recommendations. This position must meet the requirements for supervisory personnel as described in 14 CFR 145.153(b). In addition, the Chief Quality Inspector must have experience in the methods and procedures for returning aircraft to service after 100-hour, annual, and progressive inspections.

  • Responsible for the planning, direction, and coordination of quality control activities; both within the department, and in conjunction with other departments as necessary.
  • Assist, supervise, and direct personnel assigned to accomplish inspection functions.
  • Maintain and keep current a file of pertinent Federal Aviation Regulations, specifications, Type Certificate Data Sheets, and Airworthiness Directives.
  • Determine that all technical data used on all articles overhauled or repaired by the Repair Station are complete and are current with the latest revisions. This data will include manufacturers overhaul manuals, Airworthiness Directives, service bulletins, article specifications, related Federal Aviation Administration approved data and other technical data used by the Repair Station. In addition, assure that all military technical orders used in the overhaul, repair, or test of aircraft, engines, components, or parts have been evaluated and approved in advance by the FAA and are listed on the Repair Stations Operations Specifications.
  • Assure that required periodic checks are made on all inspection tools and the calibration of precision test equipment used by the Repair Station is accomplished when scheduled. Further assure that a current record of these inspections and tests are maintained, as required.
  • Assure that all precision tools and/or test equipment used by technicians and inspectors are in proper working order (serviceable); and that all precision tools and/or test equipment used by technicians and inspectors are within their approved calibration periods.
  • Determine that no unapproved parts are used during the course of maintenance, preventive maintenance, repair or alteration by this facility.
  • Submit Service Difficulty Reports after discovery of any serious failure, malfunction, or defect of an article in accordance with 14 CFR 145.221.
  • Assure the proper execution of a maintenance release and/or FAA Form 337 when required.
  • Review purchase orders, 8130-3s, certificates of conformance and other approved data attached to incoming parts to assure authenticity and traceability to an original equipment manufacturer that is a FAA accepted Production Approval Holder (PAH) or a certificate holder (i.e. 14 CFR , 121, 125, 135 and 145).
  • Maintain a list of contract maintenance functions that will or can be contracted to outside entities.
  • Qualify non-certificated contractors as described in the Repair Station Manual.
  • Inspect incoming articles that have had a maintenance function accomplished by an outside non-certificated Contract Maintenance Provider.
  • Ensure compliance with the procedures in the Repair Station Manual.
  • Conduct the preliminary, hidden damage, in process and final inspection on articles processed by the Repair Station and record results as outlined in the Repair Station Manual.
  • Coordinate with outside engineering (e.g., FAA Designated Engineering Representatives) and review the content of FAA form 8110-3s for accuracy and content.
  • Oversee the proper tagging and identification of all parts and articles as outlined in the Repair Station Manual.
  • Provide for continuity of inspection responsibility, ensuring completion of required inspection when personnel shift or assignment changes occur.
  • See that rejected and unserviceable articles determined to be scrap are handled IAW the Repair Station Manual
  • Ascertain that all inspections are properly performed on all completed work before it is approved for return to service, and that the proper inspections and maintenance records, reports and forms required for such release are properly executed.
  • In conjunction with the Service Center Manager, is responsible to the Director of Maintenance for Aero Airs Internal Audit and Surveillance System.
  • Maintain reliable, regular, and predictable attendance.
  • Successful completion and favorable results of pre-employment drug screen and criminal history background check.
  • Adhere to all Aero Air policies and standards of conduct.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in aviation management, engineering, business or related field or comparable work experience.
  • FAA Inspection Authorization Certification.
  • 2 years in a leadership role within a maintenance organization.
  • Experience working in a FAR 145 operation.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • FAA Airframe & Powerplant Certification.
  • 3-5 years experience in Quality Assurance/Airworthiness Conformity.
  • 5 years experience in maintaining and inspecting GA and corporate aircraft.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times without assistance.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and climb all day.
  • Accurate hand/eye coordination.
  • Finger dexterity is required as well as hand strength, with the ability to grasp, lift, push and pull.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
