SUMMARY
The Mechanic is required to service and maintain, keeping in good order all ground service equipment at this SP Station. To keep Swissport Ramp and other Swissport service agencies with safe and reliable equipment that meets all local and governing laws. The position encompasses functions such as driving and operating ramp vehicles and ground service equipment to the highest standard while complying with State, Airport and Swissport Standard Operating Procedures and Policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mechanic Job Functions include but are not limited to:
- Conduct daily inspection of motor vehicles, forklifts and golf carts for the purpose of ensuring that units are safe to operate. E.g. Road test vehicle
- Research for suppliers and parts using equipment manual for items needed to have unit fully the operational or be repaired.
- Submit daily report to management that records mechanical problems and work performance on the unit as well as pending duties.
- Completion and maintaining of daily work orders and inspection forms which is submitted to the Manager for review and discussion
- Conduct inventory on parts and supplies received and record.
- Prepare units for inspection by the AATT in order to be granted airside access
- Operate and drive all types of equipment – motorized and non-motorized
- Perform and show competence in preventive maintenance per established schedules on all ground support equipment by performing routine checks and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changes filters and oil, and lubricates vehicles and motor driven equipment.
- Respond to requests for on-call maintenance after hours on all ground support equipment if GSE Manager deems necessary
- Provide trouble-shooting and diagnostic assessment of ground support equipment as required
- Modify and overhaul power plant, drive-train, brake, electric and hydraulic systems
- Prepare and paint ground support equipment to SP standards as required such as Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts, Bumps out and repairs or replaces parts of damaged auto and truck bodies.
- Remove malfunctioning ground support equipment from service and ensure GSE is not returned to service until malfunction has been properly diagnosed and repaired
- Respond to emergency service calls as well as accidents involving ground support equipment
- Pick-up parts and material required for ground support equipment maintenance and repair
- Own and demonstrate proper use of tools, diagnostic equipment, etc. required for equipment maintenance and repair
- Complete all maintenance/repair documentation consistent with carrier, station, airport authority, municipal, state, federal and SP requirements
- Comply with all federal, provincial, municipal, airport authority and carrier security requirements
- Will retain a motor vehicle driver’s license for both air side / non-airside in good standing at all times
- Follow all safety guidelines set out by SP management
- Keep GSE shop and its equipment clean and serviceable at all times, report any and all deficiencies to management
- Fuel equipment as necessary with full regard for all safety and environmental requirements.
- Will liaison with Ramp management, customers and staff in a professional manner when needed
- Tunes gas and diesel engines and, as needed, replaces spark plugs, PCV valves, fuel filters, injectors, and turbo
- Disassembles units, repairs or replaces parts, and reassembles units in the following systems:
- Brake System:Repair or replace shoes, pads, drums, hoses, calipers, and cylinders.
- Cooling System:Flush radiator, replace hoses and thermostat, repair or replace radiator and water pump.
- Drive System:Repair and replace drive shaft, differential, axle, transmission, and clutch.
- Electrical System:Repair or replace fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, and defective cables and wiring.
- Exhaust and Emissions Control System:Replace mufflers, manifolds, catalytic converters, and pipes.
- Heating and Air Conditioning System: Repair or replace heater cores, condensers, compressors, hoses, and controls; recharge air conditioning systems.
- Hydraulic and Air Systems:Repair or replace hoses, valves, cylinders, compressors, and pumps.
- Steering and Suspension System:Repairs rack and pinion steering systems. Align and balance wheels, repair or replace tie rods, ball joints, gear boxes, shock absorbers, springs, steering linkage, kingpins, power steering, hoses, and pumps.
- Engines: Overhauls engines, replaces engines, and rebuilds components.
- Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
- May assist in training lower-level workers in automotive mechanic techniques.
- Knowledge of body and frame construction and ability to read mechanical and automotive blueprints, diagrams, and manuals.
- Other duties as assigned
Equipment Operator/Driver Job Functions include but are not limited to:
- Drive and/or operate ground support equipment which include tow tractors, tow bars, belt loaders, container loaders, baggage tugs, water/lavatory service trucks, aircraft ground power units, aircraft air start units, air stairs, baggage carts, cargo dollies and passenger busses.
- Transfer employees, packages, documents to and from Swissport, Airline and Airport facilities as required
- Operate vehicles within the lawful speed limits of both the public roadways and the Airport tarmac/ramp as per AVOP training.
- Operate vehicles safely so as to prevent unnecessary vehicular accidents on both public roadways and the Airport tarmac/ramp.
- Ensure vehicles are only operated when authorized to do so and for company related purposes.
- Properly and safely secure vehicles and equipment in your possession. Ensure they are locked and not susceptible to theft, towing, etc.
- Ensure vehicles’ interior are clean before and after each use. All vehicles issued to you must be received clean and returned clean.
- Ensure any and all vehicular accidents, major or minor, are reported to the Dispatch Agent. This includes dents, scrapes, broken fixtures, scratches and cracks to both interior and exterior fixture and body of vehicle.
- Ensure any and all malfunctions are reported to the Dispatch Agent. This includes seatbelts, horn, steering wheel, lights, etc.
- Accountable for cost of repairs and/or replacement of any damages of Company, Customer or Third-party vehicle or equipment as a result of any accident due to your negligence.
- Follow and comply with Standard Operating Procedures Ramp – 035: Coach/Bus Driving
- Other driving/operating duties as assigned
Qualifications and Competencies
- CXC O’Level Passes including Math and English
- Valid Driver’s License
- Certification in auto mechanic from a recognized institution
- Willingness to work in inclement weather
- Flexible to work on various shifts (days, evening, nights, weekends, and holidays)
- Ability to read, write and understand and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, policies, procedures and manuals.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
