MECHANICAL ENGINEER (BATTERIES)
Want to drive innovation...all the way to Mars? The Avionics team is looking for an exemplary individual capable of designing and developing new battery and power systems for our rockets, spacecraft, and satellites. In this role, you will create new systems and enclosures from the ground up in order to power our vehicles in-orbit, to Mars, and beyond. Our fundamental goal is to allow humanity to explore the stars; are you up for the challenge?
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to hardware development (trades, design, analysis, and validation) of world class batteries for launch vehicles, spacecraft, and satellites

  • Design, create and produce mechanical drawings and maintain design data

  • Conduct thermal, structural, and tolerance analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA)

  • Participate in validation testing, including but not limited to environmental qualification, power/thermal characterization, reliability testing, and destructive hazard assessment

  • Generate failure analyses of components as they relate to thermal, loads, vibration, and shock

  • Interface with manufacturing and supply chain teams to ensure final designs can be produced in accordance with overall project goals


Job Requirements:
>

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electro-mechanical engineering

  • 2+ years of professional or project experience in the design of mechanical and electrical systems


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline

  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working with lithium ion batteries, high voltage, high amperage, vacuum, high vibration environments, structural polymerics, etc.

  • Experience with high reliability product qualification for automotive, medical or aerospace

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a product from concept to production

  • Enthusiasm to engage in full life-cycle engineering for rapid hardware development

  • Working knowledge of thermal and structural FEA studies

  • Working knowledge on equipment and best practices for battery characterization

  • Experience with fatigue and thermal testing of electro-mechanical assemblies

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, self-starting, and demanding atmosphere

  • Preference for a curiosity to learn, and passion for continuous improvement
