Job Title: Manager I - Mechanical Engineering
Job Location - Huntsville, AL or Melbourne, FL
Responsible for supervising a team of Mechanical engineers and designers, as well as direct contribution to development of technical solutions and product. May lead a development team or consult with multiple teams as a subject matter expert. Exemplifies the DRS Way by promoting a culture of integrity, accountability, results driven, collaborative relationships and continuous improvement.
Primary & Essential Accountabilities
• Manage a team of Mechanical engineers and designers
o Support of manpower assessment and planning
o Recommend resource assignments
o Provide career/training guidance to direct reports
o Manage employee performance of direct reports
o Identify functional needs/gaps
o Support recruiting/hiring efforts
o Evaluate/recommend engineering tools
o Provide process compliance and tailoring guidance
• Lead/contribute to mechanical technical solutions and products
o Lead/contribute to a project team, a tiger team, or a process improvement initiative
o Design, analyze, integrate and document products, systems or subsystems
o Provide technical guidance and oversight to include concept development and peer/design review participation
o Support verification testing, transition to production, and field issue resolution
o Lead/contribute to Value Engineering and issue resolution teams
o Provide budget, cost and schedule input
o Participate in proposals
o Mentor engineers/designers
o Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
At least 70 of time will be allocated to technical solutions and products.
• Experience in Mechanical design of ruggedized equipment, preferably for military applications
• Proficient in design/modeling in CAD tools, preferably PTC Creo
• Experience with Thermal or Structural Analysis
• Familiar with military and industrial specifications
• Demonstrated leadership of a technical team
• Experience planning development tasks (labor estimates, schedule creation)
• Foundation supporting growth into functional management (awareness of business needs, process understanding, driven to improve technical and performance at the functional level)
Years of Experience / Level of Education
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience
