The College of Health and Human Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking eligible applicants for the above-anticipated position of Senior Aircraft Mechanic. Duties:
- Performs aircraft repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, and overhaul of all types of aircraft, aircraft powerplant, and components under FAA Repair Station BNZR547C, Aviation Flight, Southern Illinois University, IL 62901, Approved Repair Station.
- Performs intricate precision work including grinding, lapping, fitting, boring, drilling, and mating parts of aircraft to fine tolerances.
- Operates testing devices such as non-destructive testing zyglo, aircraft control surface rigging equipment, dual ignition timing equipment, carburetor adjustment gauges, surface plate operations dial indicators, micrometers, depth gauges, hole gauges, cylinder gauges, leak-down compression testing equipment, static system testing equipment, compass testing equipment, precision gauges, tensiometers, torque wrenches, cylinder bore gauges, grinding equipment, go-no-go gauges, special gauges for carburetor overhaul and magneto overhaul, borescope machine, and all major shop equipment.
- Designs and fabricates aluminum parts for major repairs and alterations to aircraft fuselages, wings, horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and all flight control surfaces.
- Reads and interprets blueprints for major aircraft alterations to meet the requirements of FAA Regulations Part 43 and FAA Supplemental Type Certificates.
- Reads and interprets wiring schematics and diagrams set forth by the manufacturer.
- Modifies engines and all their components through recommendations by the manufacturer and FAA in accordance with blueprints, diagrams, and supplemental type certificates.
- Studies and plans repairs, general maintenance, or inspection work prior to starting a job to determine the most efficient and economical methods.
- After this as an Alternate Inspector of FAA Repair Station No. BNZR547C, instructs and oversees the work of subordinates.
- Repairs and installs all types of aircraft accessories.
- Assists in teaching mechanics helper and student employees who are training to become aircraft mechanics.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Aircraft Mechanic is supervised by the Aircraft Shop Foreman. This position is almost totally controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration and applicable to an FAA Repair Station. The Repair Station Manual and various FAA publications are used as well as manufacturer's manuals.
The job requires a considerable amount of precision work and the ability to frequently make special fabrications while repairing aircraft.
The purpose of the work is to provide aircraft maintenance in an efficient manner that will ensure the safety of flight for instruction and executive transportation aircraft serving the University. The employee is rated to sign off his work with the assurance that the aircraft is airworthy.
Other skills:
- He/she must have licenses issued by the Federal Aviation Administration and have training in areas such as welding, painting, machine shop, non-destructive testing, etc.
- The Senior Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic must have experience to be rated as an Alternate Inspector under FAA Repair Station No. BNZR547C.
- He/she must also have the mathematic ability required to maintain any type of general aviation aircraft such as reading drawings, and blueprints, trimming and rigging, computing weight and balance, weighing aircraft, and overhauling engines.
- Senior Aircraft Maintenance Mechanics must have the ability to use precision equipment such as micrometers, tensiometers, torque measuring equipment, cylinder gauges, dial indicators, inclinometers, propeller protractors, go-no-go gauges, and miscellaneous precision equipment.
- He/she must have the ability and knowledge to teach or instruct in each phase of aircraft maintenance and have the ability to supervise to meet the requirements of FAA Repair Station No. BNZR547C as it pertains to "Alternate Inspectors".
Salary: This is a 12-month position with a salary of $36.00 an hour with the offer of a premium of $4.00 an hour for those Sr. Aircraft Mechanics who hold an FAA Inspection Authorization through the duration of the contract.
