Title: Director of Flight Standards
Reports To: SVP of Flight Ops, Director of Operations
Location: Corporate (HQ)
OBJECTIVE
The Director of Flight Standards is responsible for overseeing and ensuring compliance with all regulatory, operational, and training standards related to flight operations. This role involves establishing and maintaining flight procedures, training programs, and operational guidelines to ensure the highest levels of safety, efficiency, and regulatory adherence. The Director of Flight Standards serves as a key leader in promoting a culture of safety and excellence within the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure all flight operations adhere to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, including FARs, company policies, and industry standards.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the FAA and other regulatory authorities for matters related to flight standards.
- Monitor and implement changes to regulatory requirements, ensuring the company remains compliant.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for flight operations.
- Ensure all operational manuals, policies, and guidelines are current and comply with regulatory standards.
- Oversee and evaluate company training programs to ensure alignment with industry best practices.
- Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of pilot training programs, including initial, recurrent, and specialized training.
- Ensure training programs meet or exceed FAA and company requirements.
- Collaborate with the Chief Pilot, training department to maintain training quality and effectiveness.
- Collaborate with tech ops on implementation and installation of navigation and communication equipment, and other technical projects that impact flight operations.
- Work closely with the Safety Department to identify and mitigate risks in flight operations.
- Promote a safety-first culture through effective communication and leadership.
- Participate in investigations related to operational incidents, providing expert input and recommendations.
- Lead and manage the flight standards team, line check pilots ensuring effective communication and collaboration across departments.
- Mentor and develop staff, fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of flight standards into overall operations.
- Evaluate pilot performance and compliance with flight standards through audits, line checks, and training assessments.
- Identify trends and implement corrective actions to address deficiencies.
- Prepare reports on flight standards metrics, training outcomes, and compliance status for senior leadership.
- Manage In FOs, SAFOs and all regulatory communications as well as operational directives to maintain compliance.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in aviation, aerospace, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in aviation, with significant experience in flight operations.
- At least 5 years of management or leadership experience in flight standards, training, or regulatory compliance.
- Experience as a Check Airman or flight instructor is strongly preferred.
- Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate required.
- Type rating on company-operated aircraft is required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of FAA regulations and standards.
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in operational and training software tools.
- Commitment to fostering a culture of safety and excellence.
