Job Objective


The Director of Safety is responsible for providing safety expertise to assist all operating departments in achieving their safety targets, as well as coordinates Safety Management System (SMS) functions throughout the organization.


Essential Functions

  • Ensure that processes needed for the SMS are established, implemented, and maintained
  • Provide information and advice on safety matters to top management
  • Provide support and consultation on safety management to all departments
  • Develop and maintain specific SMS guidance materials and/or requirements
  • Development, revision, and distribution of the SMS Manual
  • Conduct the day-to-day activities associated with the SMS
  • Review and monitor Aviation Safety Reports (ASRs), make recommendations, report to management, and follow up as appropriate
  • Report to top management on the performance of the SMS and the need for improvement
  • Promote the SMS and a positive safety culture within the organization
  • Ensure the promotion of awareness of safety expectations throughout the organization
  • Facilitate hazard identification
  • Provide safety risk analysis and acceptance decisions
  • Provide safety planning and monitoring
  • Chair the Safety Review Board
  • Monitor the effectiveness of safety risk controls
  • Maintain records of all safety-related reports and incidents
  • Conduct safety audits of Company departments as appropriate
  • Act as the lead investigator in aircraft incidents and accidents
  • Conduct periodic audits of the SMS, operations, equipment, and facilities of sub-concessions and sub-contractors
  • Conduct observations and inspections of safety practices of company operations, equipment, and facilities
  • Attend industry safety conferences and classes to keep abreast of industry trends and problem areas
  • Interface with other organization’s SMS to cooperatively manage issues of mutual concern.
  • Assigned personnel responsibilities to include:
  • Supervision in the performance of their duties
  • Conduct performance reviews.
  • Participate in corrective action in coordination with the President in accordance with Metro Aviation, Inc. policies and procedures.
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSA)

  • Knowledge of Aviation Safety reporting systems such as ASAP, NASA, VDRP process, etc.
  • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations, General Operations Manual, Pilot Training Programs, Safety Programs, Maintenance Administration, and company manuals, etc.
  • Ability to perform investigations and root cause analysis
  • Ability to create reports and maintain company safety and risk dashboards
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Possess sound judgment and objectivity in decision-making
  • Ability to create an environment that demonstrates teamwork and professionalism with diverse personalities and professional backgrounds
  • Ability to maintain cooperative and harmonious relationships with internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong initiative
  • Proficient in directing, guiding, and evaluating personnel
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products

Education & Experience

  •  Bachelor’s degree in aviation or a related field of study is preferred
  •  Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or International Society of Safety Professionals (ISSP) certification preferred
  •  At least seven (7) years’ experience in aviation safety
  •  Operational experience in a 14CFR Part 121 or 135 air carrier, or Military Aviation


Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, squatting, pushing, pulling on various surfaces
  • Prolonged periods of air and land travel
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds at times

Work Environment

  • Temperature controlled office
  • Exposure to outdoor shop with potential extreme cold and hot temperatures and loud noises
  • Exposure to Operations customers locations to include hospitals, airports, and other various settings

Work Status, Schedule, & Travel

  • Full-time
  • Monday - Friday, 40 hours (on-call)
  • Extended periods of traveling to various customer locations - 25
