Our employees are not only part of history, theyre making history. Northrop Grumman is seeking an Environmental Conditioning Operations Lead. The position is as the lead engineer of the Environmental Exposure, Fluid Soak, Salt Spray and Heat Treat laboratories. The ideal candidate has lab experience, and is good with hands on work, and a track record of problem solving using a scientific approach. Must be able to quickly learn how to use and program lab test equipment and demonstrate an aptitude for troubleshooting various issues. The candidate should have excellent organizational skills and be able to effectively track and manage multiple projects over the course of months. Customer support is a key job function, so effective communication skills are a must. Knowledge in composite and polymer materials is a plus. The role is in-person in El Segundo, CA.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assess incoming statements of work and understand the required test procedures, lab assets and test specifications involved
Provide cost and schedule estimates for incoming work
Communicate with customers on project status
Communicate with customers on equipment capabilities, and availability
Provide forecasted timelines on anticipated work
Physically sort and load test specimens into lab equipment
Perform required measurements of samples in moisture conditioning, fluid exposures, salt fog exposure and thermal exposure
Provide periodic or final data to the customer, as needed, based on the testing procedure involved, and in a format that best suits the customer’s needs while adhering to specification and/or statement of work requirements
Remove test specimens from equipment when ready, package in the specified manner and deliver to customer or the next portion of testing
Assess and maintain stock of required exposure fluids and lab consumables
Coordinate the repairs and preventative maintenance of equipment by the Facilities Department
Coordinate the calibration of equipment by the Metrology Department
Maintain relationships with equipment vendors
Maintain relationships with commercial laboratories for testing that must be outsourced
Properly handle hazardous material
Work in an independent role, as well as in a team environment
This role may be filled as a Principal Engineer (level 3) or a Senior Principal Engineer (level 4) based on the qualifications outlined below.
Basic Qualifications
Principal Engineer level: Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 5 years of relevant experience; OR Master of Science (MS) and 3 years of relevant experience OR PhD with 1 year of relevant engineering and/or lab experience
Senior Principal Engineer level: Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 8 years of relevant experience; OR Master of Science (MS) and 6 years of relevant experience OR PhD with 4 year of relevant engineering and/or lab experience
- Must have an active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance
Experience with the Microsoft Office suite
Preferred Skills/Qualifications
Knowledge of composite, polymer and metallic materials
Experience using lab equipment
3 years of lab experience
Work using a scientific approach
Ability to program test controllers
Demonstrated history of troubleshooting skills
Strong communication skills
Proper handling of Hazardous Materials
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
