GENERAL SUMMARY:

The priority for the Environmental Safety Manager will be to create and promote the safety culture within the facility through the development, implementation and monitoring of programs and procedures to ensure overall plant and company safety. This includes ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local regulations developing and delivering safety and skills training to new and existing employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads the planning, implementation and administration of safety programs to reduce or eliminate occupational incidents and injuries.
  • Serves as key member of plant leadership head to drive cultural change in the organization.
  • Develops talent within the facility, including direct reports, through mentoring, coaching and facilitation of development opportunities, provides performance metrics and feedback.
  • Secures appropriate outside resources to provide expertise and advice on issues that cannot be resolved with internal team.
  • Demonstrates a high visibility and positive attitude to establish an effective and responsible safety culture
  • Compiles, analyzes, interprets and reports statistical data related to safety and health issues.
  • Monitors information on regulations and requirements related to hazardous materials and agents and develops policies and programs to ensure regulatory compliance with all federal, state and local laws and guidelines, including OSHA and EPA.
  • Conducts incident and near miss investigations and evaluates information to identify significant hazards and loss trends. Identifies and recommends preventive measures and corrective actions.
  • Performs regular on-site reviews of operations/facilities: physical inspections of grounds, buildings, equipment and operations; identifies hazards and incidents of regulatory non-compliance, recommends corrective measures
  • Consults with all levels of the organization to identify/define training solutions to business needs and directly or through others develops appropriate courses and leads all safety and skills training initiatives for all departments and all levels of employees.
  • Supports 6S program.
  • Leads the implementation of hazardous waste management program for large quantity generator to include regular inspections, employee training, preparedness, prevention and contingency plan requirements, universal and hazardous waste identification and characterization, storage, management and shipping, and associated recordkeeping and reporting requirements. Will lead or participate in annual comprehensive hazardous waste training on large quantity generator requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental, health and safety program management, regulatory standards and statistical reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in a fast-paced environment managing multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive performance in manufacturing processes and an understanding and utilization of manufacturing metrics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office packages.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required, with the demonstrated ability to work with teams and provide training, both individually and conduct large group presentations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hazardous waste management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health and Environmental Sciences, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, closely related area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in 6S/Lean implementation preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation preferred or other certification in safety or health.
  • Environmental safety experience required.
  • Experience leading manufacturing operations teams in a supervisory or managerial capacity preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to read reports and uses computers. Ability to communicate, write, type and operate office equipment. Ability to sit, stand, walk and exert over 35 pounds of force to move an object. Ability to work in an environment with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals and varying temperatures.
