This role originates competitively priced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Renewable Fuels and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) strategy and execution of agreements to deliver on the AC’s SAF and CDR targets while positioning ACs portfolio to meet our Climate Action Plan goal of net zero by 2050.The Manager will identify, develop, execute and manage strategic investments in SAF and CDR projects or investment opportunities where necessary to access favorable SAF offtake agreements. They will target all SAF business cases with a positive NPV relative to the “do nothing” of fossil jet fuel plus carbon.Responsibilities:
Drive technical spanet analysis & risk assessment to identify and develop strategic SAF and CDR partnerships, investments and offtake opportunities to achieve Air Canada’s announced decarbonization goals, including: business case creation analysis & development, technical and sustainability due diligence, and offtake/ investment agreement negotiation.Perform in-depth research and analysis on sustainability-related factors (risks and opportunities) to support the integration thereof in the investment and monitoring activities of AC Investments across private spanets asset classes, with an emphasis on private equity and credit investmentsSource competitively priced SAF to meet the AC’s short-term voluntary and regulatory requirements as aligned with the AC’s Climate Action Plan. Supplement further emissions reduction opportunities with the procurement of CDR.Develop a comprehensive risk analysis of all potential new SAF commitments from a capital and an offtake perspective. Evaluate opportunities and risks surrounding emerging and existing carbon incentives for production and consumption.Develop appropriate logistics supply chains for handling SAF to point of consumption. Collaborate with AC’s conventional fuel supply and fuel operations Teams to ensure sustainable fuel opportunities can be integrated with petroleum pipelines, storage and logistics (rail, trucks, waterborne) or create supply chains where none existProvide continuous technical support with regards to SAF purchasing criteria, taking into account current raw material and technology developments, international framework conditions such as incentives, environmental regulations (LCFS, CFR, ETS, CORSIA, etc.) & GHG accounting.Proactively manage the creation, aggregation and monetization of low carbon fuel credits from the creation of lower carbon fuels such as SAF and Renewable Diesel.Support engagements on an ongoing basis with AC’s portfolio companies, general partners and internal team. Act as shareholder representative for any SAF-related investments to ensure the interests of AC are promoted. Assist where required to AC delegated board director for investments requiring board representation.Work with AC Leave Less Travel Program (LLTP) to align SAF scope 3 sponsorship to originated SAF offtake agreements.Contract Management of all executed supply deals to maximize value and sustainability of the supplier relationship. Provide SAF and SAF-related technical and subject matter expertise and guidance both internally and externally. Actively participate in Climate Oversight Committee.Advise senior leaders on rapidly evolving sustainable fuels landscape to strategically position AC.Engage in and connect internal stakeholders to the latest SAF developments and trends, including representing AC at industry events and other platforms.Actively engage with Legal, Government Affairs, Environmental Programs, and others on policy advocacy on a global/regional basis for regulatory developments such as low carbon fuels mandates, carbon taxes and impact to AC jet fuel pricing. Support the development and enhancement of sustainability and climate-related policies and internal teams.Build and maintain relationships with relevant airlines, associations, and government stakeholders to influence the development of aligned local, regional, and national policies consistent with AC’s strategy.Serve as a company champion of SAF’s contribution to AC’s broader environmental sustainability strategySupport AC internal climate action group in the procurement of renewable fuels (such us Renewable Diesel) for ground support fleet or any other airside assets.
QualificationsThorough knowledge of current state of SAF: Technical (feedstock/pathways, logistics, opportunities/constraints), Commercial (current and future players, vertical value chain, competitor activities), Policy (Current and proposed legislation, LCFS, CFR RINs, BT)High degree of proficiency in GHG emissions accounting, decarbonization planning and project implementation, engineering project management, financial modelling and or forecastingKnowledge of environmental life cycle assessment, including familiarity with the GHGenius, LCA, GREET modelKnowledge of petroleum industry; specifically jet fuel and/or refined products and logisticsExtensive knowledge of sustainability and greenhouse gas reporting frameworks and lifecycle assessment, including familiarity with the main regulatory and voluntary frameworksCommercial experience in negotiating and managing contracts and complex agreementsExperience partnering cross-functionally in a large, corporate environment and a history of driving resultsSkilled in understanding and explaining commercial risk and technical concepts in a manner tailored to the audienceAbility to communicate insights from technical reports, publications, and presentations in a structured, digestible, and concise mannerUniversity degree or higher in the relevant field such as sustainability, finance, business administration, or a related discipline. Additional sustainability related certifications are assetsDemonstrated expertise through minimum two (2) years of relevant sustainability-related experience in the sustainable investing, investment ownership or management industry, with a focus on private equity and credit investmentsExpert level experience, expansive and far reaching knowledge in renewable fuels/energy transition and/or experience in aviation fuels supply chain (renewable or conventional)Full proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)Strong entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to innovateHigh degree of professionalism and discretion is essentialFlexibility with work hours and must be willing to travel (<20) for industry events, conferences, meetings with external parties, etcCompletion of (or working towards) a designation in SCMA, ISM or other procurement designation is an asset
