Boeing Defence UK is offering the opportunity to join their expansive Safety Management System team in providing Products and Services Safety.  The successful candidate will be lead SMS Safety Investigations across BDUK programmes and wil join a multidisciplinary SMS team of circa 20 experienced members during an exciting time of growth within BDUK.  The role will involve travel to the various BDUK sites and engagement with numerous functions and departments during the process of conducting Safety Investigations.  The role is key in ensuring timely and effective Safety Investigations are conducted which underpin the BDUK Just Culture policy and support mitigation strategies.  The role also brings opportunities to engage with the MoD Air Safety Teams, BDUK Suppliers and the wider Boeing enterprise.

Position Overview:

Working within the BDUK Safety Management System (SMS) and reporting to the BDUK Products and Services Safety Senior Manager.  Leading the safety investigation process across all BDUK programmes.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Safety Investigation mentor and lead practitioner responsible for governance and standard setting for all safety investigations conducted with the BDUK SMS to assure the timeliness and quality of investigations.
  • Working to maintain and evolve BDUK safety investigation process to evolve and promote safety investigation best practice in alignment with Just Culture principles.
  • Establish a governance and mentor programme to develop and maintain competency across BDUK safety investigators and Occurrence Review Group panel members.
  • Working closely with the BDUK Occurrence Manager to establish trending and the identification of repetitively weak barriers which should be targeted in the safety reporting tool and Incident XP tools.
  • Acting as the management focal for safety investigations across BDUK ensuring investigations are coordinated with the relevant stakeholders.
  • Govern the Occurrence Review Groups/Event Review Groups
  • Working closely with programme Safety leads to coordinate the tracking of identified safety investigation recommendations to closure within their area of responsibility.
  • Work closely with the BDUK Safety Promotion and Training Lead to produce SMS Promotion campaigns based around the investigation team findings.
  • Manage Safety Investigation metrics using the BDUK SMS tool. This includes the design and continued development of appropriate metrics and coordination of safety investigation inputs to relevant safety meetings.
  • Lead the development and delivery of safety investigation and Occurrence Review Group training.
  • Work with the wider Boeing Enterprise to support investigation forums and share best practice across the wider Boeing safety investigation community.
  • Regular travel within the UK is expected and some overseas travel may be required.

Essential Qualifications: (Experience/Education/Skills)

  • HNC (minimum) in Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience in aircraft engineering, maintenance or operation.
  • Formal training in Safety Investigation and Just Culture principles.
  • Significant experience in safety investigations and the application of Just Culture
  • Formal Safety Management Systems training and experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead on the planning of work, and develop/use meaningful metrics to evaluate safety status and provide performance visibility.
  • Able to effectively identify and execute opportunities to improve existing processes and training to provide improved safety mitigations and error management strategies.
  • Lead on the removal of obstacles by identifying where and what help is needed and coordinating with the appropriate leaders and team members.
  • The candidate should possess strong communication skills, technical competency, and skills within formal reporting writing tools such as MS Word.
  • The role will have significant UK MoD customer, supplier and wider Boeing interface and therefore a person who is diplomatic whilst being strong minded is essential.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with the use of common safety tools such as Risk Registers, Bow Ties including the use of Incident XP for safety investigation results.
  • Experience using MoD’s ASIMS/DASORs for in-service occurrence reporting and mandatory reporting of events to the military or civil authorities.
  • Experience in using civil and military safety reporting tools.
