Job Summary

The Senior Export Control Counsel (US) (SECC) is an expert in the field of Export Control and Sanctions and will provide counsel and technically excellent advice, with a strong focus on US Export Control and Sanctions regulations.

As a member of the Corporate Export Control Team the role will report to the Head of Export Control Compliance (HECC) and working closely with the Export Control function, drive the continued development of the GKN Aerospace Export Control program in the US along with providing strong governance and assurance.

Job Responsibilities
  • Providing specialist legal support and advice on US export control and sanctions matters to senior GKN Aerospace stakeholders, in particular the HECC, Business Line export control leads and senior business stakeholders.
  • Ensuring GKN Aerospace has effective policy, procedures, guidance and training, tools and systems to enhance compliance with particular focus on US regional requirements.
  • Identifying gaps and shortcomings in procedures and knowledge, and take ownership of resolving them – e.g. by Leading the development, implementation and oversight of any required procedures, guidance, training and communication.
  • Undertake audits and ensure a comprehensive program of assurance is in place, to include audit, risk assessment and reporting to identify vulnerabilities and best practice.
  • Lead on major investigations into export control and/or sanctions non-compliance, including the review and approval of disclosures along with oversight of all US export control incidents, investigations and corrective actions.
  • On behalf of GKN Aerospace attend appropriate export control and sanctions associations and industry groups.
  • Leading enterprise level communication with US regulators, as appropriate.
  • Monitoring and keeping up to date with the export control and sanctions regulations of all countries with which the organization conducts business, including assessing the impact of sanctions.  Advising the HECC and business stakeholders on any US specific issues and requirements which may impact the GKN Aerospace strategy.
  • You will be accountable for owning your own development and adopting a growth mindset: you will be open and willing to continuously improve your export control/sanctions and non – export control/sanctions skills.
  • You will have to work frequently with other members of the Export Control, Legal and Corporate Compliance team on a matrix basis.  You will need to be flexible and show sound judgement when dealing with organisational ambiguity.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • In-house experience at both a top tier law firm and / or in-house at a major MNC.
  • Significant experience in advising on a range of highly complex technical export control, sanctions and compliance issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to work efficiently on own initiative to get things done, able to identify, focus and prioritize key legal/compliance matters, to work under pressure and manage multiple stakeholders.
  • A completer/finisher who can demonstrate work/life balance.
  • A strong and independent personality, with the ability to operate on significant issues with little supervision but being able to recognize which issues require support or escalation to the Head of Export Control Compliance.
  • The capability to identify, work with and influence key internal and external stakeholders and be an effective and skilled communicator; experience in advising and working with senior stakeholders.
  • Recognizes the importance of building effective relationships and establishing trust and a collaborative working relationship with colleagues both inside and outside of the function; effectively manages and owns relationships with business colleagues and builds trust through collaboration.
