Job Description:
Project description
The Cryogenic Propulsion program is a 3-year effort to explore the potential of superconducting materials and cryogenic temperatures on the performance of an aircraft’s electrical propulsion system.
This ground-test demonstrator is an ambitious, futuristic and disruptive superconducting and cryogenic experimental powertrain for hybrid/full electric propulsion system.
This demo will be composed of a superconducting DC/AC network, a cryogenic motor control unit, a superconducting electric motor and of a cryogenic system. This also goes with the development of several sub-demonstrators.
The opportunity of an R&T material engineering internship has risen within the team, based in Toulouse. This internship will ideally begin in March 2024 (date subject to flexibility), and will last for a period of 6 months.
Your main missions
As a R&T material engineering intern, your main mission will be to handle:
Bibliographic study of materials recommended for applications at cryogenic temperature (Metallic materials and polymer materials of high performance thermoplastic and thermosetting type)
Testing and characterization of materials used in cryogenics
Thermal fatigue cycling between high temperature and cryogenic temperature
Thermal conductivity at cryogenic temperatures
Electrical conductivity and dielectric behavior at cryogenic temperatures
Contribution to material failure analyses
Optionally, creation of finite element models allowing the correlation of test results
The expected deliverable consists in a database including:
You will need to collaborate with a diverse technical team in order to understand the multi-disciplinary constraints of the powertrain.
An open personality and the ability to work with a good autonomy level in a multicultural environment will be necessary.
Your boarding pass
What you bring:
Interest for aeronautic/aerospace and new technologies
Good experience in design and prototyping
Basic knowledge in superconducting materials or cryogeny
Creativity
Keen to test & propose ideas
Autonomy, Adaptability, Availability, Accountability
Team-Player mindset
Hands-on and solution oriented attitude
Passion about technology, science
Values of transparency, courage, humility, empathy
Willingness to have fun
What you get:
To understand:
The basic physics of the powertrain (supra-conductivity, cryogenics, motor)
The complexity of multi-disciplinary systems integration (mechanic, electricity, vacuum, cryogeny, measures) in a constrained and fast-changing environment
Experience on:
Fast prototyping for R&T purposes
Product development (design, manufacturing, integration, entry-into-service, tests)
Knowledge in design manufacture and deliver prototypes
Solving design problems with multiple variables (static, kinematic, thermal, systems integration) and constraints (size, weight, manufacturing) using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Modelling (FEM) softwares.
General knowledge on aeronautic industry
An environment that not only fosters your development in many ways, but also rewards it with plenty of room to grow
A shared open space office with highly skilled multicultural teams
A high-achieving, experienced and fun team
Canteen with a different desert each day
Great choice of coffee (eventually open to tea/chocolate aficionados)
