Key Responsibilities:

The Base Carpenter Technician is responsible for the full range of rough and finished skilled carpentry work, including cabinetry. Incumbents work from blueprints, specifications, drawings and instructions to design, build, remodel, retrofit, maintain and repair various types of facilities and structures.

Key Duties:
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations
  • Estimate cost, time and materials for carpentry projects
  • Participate in the maintenance and operation of the carpentry shop
  • Designs, constructs, remodels, retrofits and repairs interior and exterior structures made of wood, drywall, plaster, concrete or brick
  • Designs, constructs, retrofits, and repairs cabinets, tables, shelves, benches, partitions, flooring, door and window frames, and other types of furniture
  • May install and repair modular furniture
  • Secures furniture for earthquake preparedness
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service
  • Carpenters are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). Salary increases will be administered according to the current IBT/United contract
Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed:
  • Two (2) years of journey-level experience working as a carpenter in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting, including rough and finished carpentry
  • Knowledge of residential construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety
  • Proficient at the following tasks: stain-grade trim work, hang doors, drill and set door hardware, set windows, layout for stairs and common rafters, cabinet making
  • High School diploma/GED or education equivalent
  • Able to read blueprints
  • Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but no limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted) bending, standing, climbing or walking
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
What will help you propel from the pack:
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment used in both rough and finished carpentry in both residential and commercial/industrial settings
  • Completion of a recognized four year Apprenticeship Program, or equivalent training, or two years of verifiable experience as a skilled Carpenter in all phases of residential construction
  • Applicable knowledge of building and safety code requirements
  • Knowledge of methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery and equipment
