Belt Grinders will also be trained to work in Production Grinding as needed.
MISSION:
Uses a variety of machines and equipment to remove gating from castings in order to meet tech card requirements and customer specifications.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Belt Grinding
Objective: Belt grind parts to tech card tolerances with out part mutilation and at acceptable rates to meet department goals.
Typical Activities:
- Review tech cards and belt grind parts to required tolerances while applying pre-determined best practices.
- Work with part engineers, trainers, supervision and other operators to help establish best practices and to reduce manufacturing costs.
- Performs other departmental and team tasks as directed by supervision.
2. Inspection
Objective: To assure compliance with belt grind technique cards and to meet customer specifications.
Typical Activities:
- Verifies dimensional compliance using micrometers, calipers, and similar types of dimensional inspection devices.
- Provides assistance/training to other operators in the Department as required by the lead or supervisor.
3. Production Grinding
Objective: to grind and blend gating and defect areas on castings, and provide surface finishing within dimensional tolerances; to remove the minimum amount of metal necessary to remain within specified tolerances.
Typical Activities:
Reviews tech cards and blueprints to determine grinding requirements.
- Determines stock removal requirements and tolerances for removal of gate material or other added metal stock.
- Determines acceptance limits for grinding and blending defects.
- Uses counter-balanced belt grinders, fixed grinders, held-held grinders, air tools, and hand tools including files and mirrors to grind and polish casting areas.
- Wears required protective shields, clothing, wrist supports, glasses and gloves during grinding operations.
- Visually inspects castings during grinding operations to assure compliance with specifications.
- Makes dimensional measurements on specified parts to assure compliance with specifications, marks undersized areas for further inspection.
4.Labor reporting
Objective: To accurately report time and quantities against work orders.
Typical Activities:
- Uses bar code equipment to perform transactions.
- Completes entries on Process records accurately and in compliance with quality requirements.
- Accurately records data for special projects as required.
5. Safety
NOTE: for job positions that require respiratory protection (more than a filtering face piece – dust mask): In compliance with the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division Personal Protective Equipment standard for Respiratory Protection, OAR 437, Div. 2/I 1910.134 and Oregon Health Division Rules for the Control of Radiation, OAR 333. Div. 120 (333-120-300 through 330), certain tasks within this job position require/may require the use of a NIOSH-approved respirator. An individual will not be assigned to these tasks if the person is not able to work under these conditions. Respirator selection will be based on the work performed, exposure information, duration of use and any other relevant factors. If a tight-fitting respirator is required, facial hair, temple pieces on glasses or other items that interferes with the face-to-face piece seal of the respirator are not permitted.
Objective: To take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.
Typical Activities:
- Adheres to plant and department safety rules.
- Performs all job-related tasks in a manner that supports a pro-active safety program in which the operator’s behavior clearly demonstrates a commitment to safety.
- Identifies and reports safety problems.
6. Training:
The majority of training will be On-The-Job and, in most cases, accompanied with task specific training modules. It will be the employee’s responsibility to progress through these tasks with performance and quality levels that comply with the requirements identified in the Step Progression Record.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience and working knowledge of grinding tools, equipment, and materials is preferred.
- Basic ability to follow instructions, read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations is required.
- Ability to use and read dimensional tools including calipers, gauges and micrometers is preferred.
- Ability to read, interprets, and follows specifications on Tech Cards and Process Control Procedures.
- Requires prolonged periods of standing and the ability to continuously or repetitively maneuver objects weighing as much as 80 pounds. Lifting requirements are also a consideration but weights in excess of 35 pounds should be handled using the assistance of other operators and/or appropriate lifting devices.
- Ability to work in difficult working conditions. These may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes, awkward physical positions and other elements for extended periods of time.
MAJOR PLANT DIFFERENCES:
Department reporting may vary between Business Operation. One Business Operation may require that parts remain stationary while equipment moves over the part; another Business Operation may require that equipment remain stationary while the part moves over the equipment. In both cases the fundamentals, quality and performance issues will remain similar.
