Job Description 1

PURPOSE:

Under limited supervision, perform all required operations to heat treat a wide variety of company product castings following established methods and procedures; maintain required records.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Work from route cards, heat treat procedures and any special instruction supplied to heat treat, anneal, harden and temper, or solutionize and age a wide variety of castings of various materials and alloys. Temperatures, time cycles, quench atmosphere and other variables are specified. The heat treater must set and adjust variables, load furnace following established practice, and operate as necessary to comply with established procedures. Withdraw and quench or cool parts as directed. Maintain all required operation records; change recording instruments charts and perform other related duties as required. Submit parts and/or test bars for hardness, tensile strength, elongation and other control checks following established practice.
Perform periodic furnace temperature checks using test thermocouples and potentiometers to obtain temperature readings in various specified interior areas. Maintain all required records, and prepare related reports. Perform acceptance checks on incoming thermocouples and calibration documentation.
Detect and report improper operation and unusual conditions to proper supervisor. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition. Follow prescribed safety regulations. Perform a variety of other tasks of equal or lesser complexity as assigned by supervisor.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Perform heat treating and related operation; maintain required records. Requires the use of judgment to plan work, load furnaces and trays properly to avoid distortion of parts, train the heat treat trainees, maintain records and perform other job duties.
Continuous mental or visual attention in loading, operating, running tests and checks, maintaining records and other duties involving constant alertness.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Finishing lead person and Finishing supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Use ordinary arithmetic, charts, and tables.
Make simple use of charts, tables and specifications.
Requires interpretation skills for various tests, use and checking or reports, forms records and comparable data.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities 1

• Work from melt log, schedules operation and other instructions to pour molds for any Company product part(s).
• Comply with established procedures and/or special instruction in the loading of ovens with shells and flasks.
• Maintain proper temperatures; pull flasks or shells for pouring; position.
• Perform other preparatory operations as specified check temperature, skim and pour: dispose of as instructed.
• Exercise care in pouring operations to comply with specified procedures and practices; avoid damages, non-fills, or injuries through mishandling. Take sample of melt and tag.
• Maintain melting pot and crucibles, repatch and replace as necessary. Maintain ladles and set aside for knock-out and ram operations.
• Perform cleaning maintenance of ovens, notify supervisor of any unusual conditions.
• Detect and report improper operation and unusual conditions to proper supervision. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition. Follow prescribed safety regulations.
• Constant care necessary to prevent injury to others, due to the inherent hazards of the job

Experience & Education 1

6 months to one year foundry experience preferred
High School Diploma/GED

Required Skills 1

• Use ordinary arithmetic, decimals and fractions. Make simple use of schedules and specifications, requiring interpretation of forms, records and comparable data
• Heavy physical demand consisting of frequently lifting or moving average weight materials, pouring molds, handling dewaxing flasks and performing other duties
• Continuous mental and visual attention in checking, pouring performing other related duties.
