Position Overview:

A Helicopter Test Pilot conducts flight tests to evaluate the performance, safety, and reliability of new and modified helicopter designs, systems, and components. This role involves working closely with engineers, designers, and other stakeholders to ensure that the helicopter meets all performance, safety, and regulatory standards. The pilot provides critical feedback and data that influence design decisions and improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Flight Testing:

-       Conduct flight tests for new and modified helicopter to evaluate performance, handling qualities, and safety.

-       Execute specific test maneuvers and procedures as outlined in the test plans.

-       Operate helicopter systems and instrumentation during test flights to gather data.

2. Data Collection and Analysis:

-       Record flight test data using onboard systems and manual methods.

-       Analyze flight data to identify anomalies, performance issues, and areas for improvement.

-       Collaborate with engineering teams to interpret data and suggest modifications.

3. Safety and Compliance:

-       Ensure all flight operations are conducted in accordance with regulatory standards and safety protocols.

-       Participate in safety briefings and risk assessments before each flight.

-       Contribute to the development of safety procedures and emergency response plans.

4. Documentation and Reporting:

-       Prepare detailed test reports, including data analysis, observations, and recommendations.

-       Maintain accurate logs of test flights, including flight hours, test conditions, and results.

-       Present findings to stakeholders, including engineers, management, and regulatory bodies.

5. Collaboration:

-       Work closely with design and engineering teams to understand test objectives and provide feedback.

-       Participate in design reviews and provide input based on test results.

-       Engage with maintenance and ground crews to ensure helicopter readiness for testing.

6. Continuous Improvement:

-       Stay updated on advancements in aviation technology, testing methodologies, and regulatory changes.

-       Contribute to the development of new testing techniques and protocols.

-       Mentor and train junior test pilots and other flight crew members.

Qualifications:

-       Education: Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Aviation Science, or a related field. Advanced degrees are advantageous

-       Experience:

o   Extensive flight experience, including a minimum of 1,500 flight hours as a pilot.

o   Experience with a variety of helicopter types, including experimental and prototype models.

o   Previous experience as a test pilot is highly desirable.

-       Certifications:

o   Commercial Pilot License (CPL(H)/IR) or Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL(H)).

o   Rotary Wing Flight Test Course Cat2.

o   Rotary Wing Test Pilot School graduate certification is preferred.

o   Instrument and multi-engine ratings as required by the specific aircraft.

-       Skills:

o   Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

o   Excellent communication and reporting skills.

o   Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

o   High level of attention to detail and situational awareness.

Work Environment:

-       Primarily based at testing facilities and airfields.

-       Frequent travel may be required to various testing sites and manufacturing locations.

-       Exposure to various weather conditions and potentially hazardous environments during flight tests.

Physical Requirements:

-       Ability to meet medical and physical requirements for pilot certification.

-       Capability to endure the physical demands of test flights, including high G-forces and extended flight durations.
