Job Description SummaryWe present a unique opportunity for a dedicated masters student at TU Berlin to undertake a challenging master’s thesis project with our combustion team at the Advanced Aviation Technology Center of Excellence. The focal point of this project lies in investigating the Precessing Vortex Core (PVC), a dominant flow structure prevalent in swirled fuel injection systems, among other configurations. These coherent structures have the potential to interact with the flame, causing fluctuations in heat release. In a worst-case scenario, these fluctuations can couple with an acoustic mode of the combustion chamber, leading to significant pressure variations that must be mitigated. The masters thesis project will leverage a cutting-edge analytical tool for Linear Mean Field Analysis (LMFA), a method in the realm of numerical fluid mechanics. The primary objective of this study is to further advance the LMFA toolset to ultimately advance our understanding of the PVCs nature and to develop effective control measures.

This full-time position is limited to 6 months with a start-date as soon as possible.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Key aspects of the master’s thesis project include:

  • Data analysis of the PVC in provided Large-Eddy Simulation results for non-reacting conditions,
  • Identification of the PVC as a global linear mode via LMFA in a two-dimensional domain,
  • Repeat Step 2 for a three-dimensional computational domain,
  • Extend the functionality of the LMFA to compressible formulations,
  • Analyze the PVC under reactive conditions (optional).

Qualifications/Requirements:

To thrive in this role, you should possess:

  • Enrolment in a relevant masters program at TU Berlin (e.g. physics engineering),
  • A strong academic background in computational fluid dynamics and aeroacoustics,
  • A genuine interest in gas-turbine combustion dynamics,
  • Proficiency in flow modelling and data analysis,
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, enabling effective collaboration and information sharing,
  • A proactive attitude that fuels your motivation to overcome challenges and deliver results,
  • Openness and creativity, inspiring innovative thinking and problem-solving,
  • A team-oriented approach, thriving in a complex multi-site network structure,
  • Fluency in English, ensuring seamless communication within our international team.

Desired Characteristics:

In addition to the above, the following qualities would be highly advantageous:

  • Initiative to deepen your technical expertise in engine simulation and modeling methods, keeping abreast of the latest advancements,
  • Passion for engaging with the aeronautical industry, actively seeking opportunities for growth and collaboration.
