Master Thesis in the field of Assessment of Container Runtimes (d/f/m)

Airbus Defence and Space is developing embedded real-time software for military aircraft. The domain is therefore set to safety or mission critical products. The development shall fulfil considerations of certification aspects as per RTCA DO-178C and its supplements. Furthermore, the product is to be certified according to DO-297, covering Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Development, DO-326A, covering Airworthiness Security Process Specification and DO-356A, covering Airworthiness Security Methods and Considerations.

Today, virtualization technologies are utilized in several domains as they bring diverse benefits such as the principle of loose coupling. This enables faster deployment and less integration effort but also the important advantage of controlled resource allocation and management.

Different container runtimes are well known and applied in industry. However, none of them are applied in Avionics. As a starting point it is required to compare the virtualization techniques w.r.t. certification objectives, identify possible hindrances and recommend the necessary Means of Compliance.

Your tasks and responsibilities
  • Identify critical objectives of the above-mentioned certification guidelines

  • Assess the fulfillment of objectives, e.g., by reviewing the applied mechanism of the technology

  • Recommend practices towards fulfillment of the objectives, e.g., propose amendments of the architecture/ technology

  • Identify performance criteria (KPIs) for the evaluation of improvements

  • Implement one selected amendment to one selected container runtime

  • Implement a small demonstration of avionics software utilizing the amended container runtime

The Thesis shall address the following research questions
  • Which assurance is required in order to fulfill the certification objectives when utilizing container runtimes?

  • Which Means of Compliance can be applied for the fulfillment of the certification objectives?

  • Which architecture elements are necessary for demonstration purposes of the selected container runtime?

  • What key performance indicators (KPIs) can be defined to evaluate the effectiveness of architectural amendments or technology enhancements in improving compliance with certification objectives?

  • How can identified amendments be practically implemented within selected container runtimes to enhance their suitability for avionics software development?

Desired skills and qualifications
  • Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) in the area of computer science, mathematics or related areas

  • Good programming skills

  • UML, SysML (an advantage)

  • Knowledge in virtualization technologies

  • Knowledge of functionality and architecture of embedded systems (an advantage)

  • Knowledge in modeling methods and tools (an advantage)
