KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

  • Support new molecule discovery and research by performing experimental work.
  • Work includes setting-up and maintaining chemical synthesis equipment and a variety of instrumental analysis equipment, as well as operating currently validated experiments and support of lab experiments by making scientific observations, maintaining experimental records, performing calculations, data analysis, and accurately reporting data.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate an established track record of safely conducting a variety of chemical reactions up to kilo-scale under the direction of chemists.
  • The applicant must be able to perform troubleshooting on various lab equipment and instrumentation.

Technical skills and Qualifications:

  • Requires formal education and relevant experience in chemical R&D laboratory setting such as:
  • R&D Laboratory Scientific Observations and Record-Keeping
  • Keen eye for making and recoding critical experimental observations in a chemical R&D laboratory environment
  • Established track record of maintaining laboratory notebook with thorough reporting of experimental data and observations
  • Ability to understand and identify of chemical and physical changes throughout the course of experiments
  • Ability to constructively contribute to experimental DOE plans based on previous experiments

R&D Laboratory Equipment:

  • Design and assemble custom lab apparatus
  • Strong mechanical aptitude to understand and troubleshoot the various equipment utilized in various process, purification, and testing equipment and experiments.
  • Autoclave reactions under following conditions: elevated pressure, elevated temperature
  • Semi-continuous and batch reactions in glass or heated-tube reaction schemes
  • Pressure/vacuum distillations in glass or metal columns
  • Sample preparation and manipulation in vacuum rack/manifold apparatus (Schlenk-line techniques)
  • Properly and safely operating laboratory instrumentationsafely handling highly hazardous materials including liquefied gases and cryogenic materials

R&D Laboratory Support and Safety:

  • Ability to measure and calculate physical properties of pure materials and mixtures such as: concentration, density, molecular weight, vapor pressure, solubility, pH, etc.
  • Understand and work with chemical notation such as: balanced chemical reaction, work in SI and IP units, convert between wt and mol, etc.
  • The applicant will be expected to work independently and be able to understand abstract concepts.
  • Strong communication skills in a team environment where hard project deadlines are often encounteredAbility to work safely with minimum supervision and understand SDS terminology

YOU MUST HAVE
  • Minimum of a four-year degree required; chemistry, chemical engineering, or material science preferred.
  • Citizenship/Immigration Status: Due to U.S. export control laws applicable at this site, must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident (Green Card holder), or have protected status as defined by 8 U.S.C. u00A71324b(a)(3).

WE VALUE:

  • The applicant is expected to be familiar with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook), some data acquisition programs, and various instrumental control software suites.

Physical Demands:
The applicant must be able to move up to 1000 lb liquid nitrogen cylinders and other large gas cylinders using proper tools; be able to lift, handle, and dispense from 5 gallon pails and to be able to move, handle, and dispense from 55 gallon drums. Occasional lifting and manipulation of objects less than 50 pounds may be required. Handling of chemicals, including isocyanates, polyols, amines, fluorocarbons, hydrocarbons, and other hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals is required.

 

Work Environment:
The applicant is expected to work safely at all time and to actively participate in the groups safety program. The applicant must have strong communication skills in a team environment where hard project deadlines are often encountered. In order to be qualified for this position, applicants must be able to wear safety shoes, chemical goggles, safety glasses with side shields, and respiratory equipment.
