GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Safety Technician I supports and assists the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager in planning, implementing, and coordinating safety and environmental programs in accordance with written regulations, procedures, and policies.

DUTIES

  • Assess workplaces for environmental hazards, such as exposure to radiation, chemical or biological hazards, or excessive noise.
  • Assess workplaces for physical hazards, such as slips, trips and falls, equipment and machinery hazards.
  • Issue, maintain and train personal in the proper use of PPE, including fit testing of personnel who wear respirators.
  • Verify proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hearing and eye protection, hand and body protection, and respirator usage.
  • Evaluate potentially hazardous situations when a worker has refused to work or believes that danger or potential harm exists.
  • Investigate mishaps that result in injury to personnel, damage to equipment, or near misses that had a potential of injury or damage.
  • Maintain all required safety and environmental records and documentation.
  • Train personnel on required safety and environmental matters annually and as required, including Adult CPR and New Employee Indoctrination.
  • Assists the EHS Manager as required.
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • AS or certificate in EHS field of study.
  • Strong grasp of the English language to include both written and verbal forms of communication.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations concerning safety and environmental health in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Functional Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk, stand, crawl, kneel and bend on level and/or inclined surfaces for certain periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp, pull over hand, push, reach or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift up to 44 pounds and heavy, moderate carrying up to 44 pounds.
  • Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales with or without corrective lens.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Must be able to distinguish color, shades of color and judge three-dimensional depth.

Environmental Factors:

  • Work in an inside/outside environment to include working around machinery, objects, vehicles, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Excessive noise and vibration that can be intermittent or constant.
  • Environmental conditions can included but not limited to dust, silica, asbestos, fumes, smoke, gas, solvents such as degreasing agents, grease, oils, and electrical energy
  • Working on slippery or uneven surfaces
  • Working closely with others or working alone
  • Possible protracted or irregular hours of work as needed or required.
