As a sUAS Pilot you will:
  • Apply your experience piloting remotely controlled / unmanned aircraft to the specific technical tasks at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC).
  • Work with a team of driven, supportive and highly skilled professionals.
Duties of a sUAS Pilot:
  • Lead teams on all projects supported by the AFRC Model Laboratory.
  • Provide leadership and support in the development, implementation, and monitoring of processes needed to operate a functional laboratory in support of Center subscale unmanned aircraft requirements in compliance with applicable Center processes and procedures.
  • Responsible for supporting and maintaining documentation and configuration control of assigned aircraft in accordance with Center procedures.
  • Responsible for buildup, maintenance, repair, modification, upgrade, preflight, thru flight, post flight, and storage of all aircraft, aircraft support systems, and other equipment assigned to the AFRC Model Laboratory.
  • Support airworthiness, flight safety, and technical reviews of Center subscale unmanned aircraft systems as assigned or requested.
  • Able to support developing conceptual design solutions, fabrication design and manufacturing services, system component installation, integration, modification, repair, upgrade, and system test activities for UAS remote cockpit stations that support Center subscale aircraft UAS pilot training and / or research projects under the purview of the Model Laboratory.
  • Provide technical assistance to analyze and support design implementation, flight system and test article fabrication, aircraft buildup techniques, flight operations strategies, flight crew training procedures, system problem identification and repair solutions, and other related support for Center subscale unmanned aircraft projects.
  • Support subscale UAS development, integration testing, and flight operations, as assigned, in both laboratory and field conditions.
  • Assist in preparation, loading, unloading, set-up, teardown, and transportation of assigned aircraft and support systems for the purpose of conducting flight operations or Center public relations activities.
  • Serve as an subscale unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) Safety Pilot.
  • All work performed will be in accordance with NASA ISO AS9100 procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
Job Requirements:
  • Must be a US citizen
  • High School Diploma and minimum 15 years' experience piloting remotely controlled / unmanned aircraft, plus experience with more than one sUAS type (e.g. fixed wing, multirotor, rotorcraft, turbine, etc.)
  • FAA Class III Medical Certificate - Required
  • Master-level skill piloting remotely controlled subscale unmanned aircraft.
  • Subject matter expert in all aspects of subscale unmanned aircraft systems.
  • Previous UAS or small UAS (sUAS) flight operation experience.
  • The candidate shall be capable of operating various types of UAS via hand control station, ground station/cockpit and/or buddy box configurations.
  • Must be capable of safely operating all subscale aircraft developed under this effort.
  • Must be capable of supporting flight operations under laboratory and field conditions.
  • Possess moderate level of experience and expertise designing, fabricating, integrating, testing, maintaining, and operating subscale unmanned aircraft.

A security clearance may be required for this position. You must be eligible to obtain a security clearance.
