Job Description:

Purpose and Scope: The Air Traffic Controller shall provide air traffic control services, aircraft ground operations control, aircrew support, and Radar Airfield Weather Services (RAWS) / Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems (ATCALS) to ensure safety of arriving and departing aircraft and safety of personnel working around aircraft IAW AFMAN 13-204 Volume 3 and DAFMAN 13-204 Volume 4. This position is in support of the Air Force Contract Augmentation Program (AFCAP) and is located at Ascension Island Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF).

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Operate, maintain, and perform daily checks of the primary crash alarm system.
  • Utilize constant radar surveillance to issue speed, altitude and directional instructions to pilots for purpose of keeping aircraft properly separated.
  • Provide approach control service to aircraft going into certain airports within a centers assigned area.
  • Answer radio calls from arriving and departing aircraft and issues such landing and takeoff instructions and information as runway to use, wind velocity and direction, visibility, taxiing instructions, and pertinent data on other aircraft operating in vicinity.
  • Transfer control of departing flights to and accepts control of arriving flights from air traffic control center, using telephone or interphone.
  • Alert airport emergency crew and other designated personnel by radio or telephone when airplanes are having flight difficulties.
  • Receive and provide information and guidance to aircrews for flight safety.
  • Monitor both very high frequency (VHF) and ultra-high frequency (UHF) emergency frequencies (121.5 and 243.0) at all times during control tower operations and ensure these frequencies have both receive and transmit capabilities.
  • Operate and maintain UHF/VHF radio for air-to-ground, ship-to-shore, non-secure voice communications. 
  • Verify operational status of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) communications recording equipment.
  • Report all instances of Meaconing, Intrusion, Jamming, Interference (MIJI) to the USAF AFM immediately by telephone and follow up with a detailed e-mail to the USAF AFM and COR (as needed).
  • Receive and provide information and guidance to aircrews for flight safety.
  • Maintain permanent record of all daily aircraft events directed by the control tower.
  • Ensure that all requirements are met as defined in the Performance Work Statement.
  • Closely supervises equipment and material within assigned area of responsibility.  

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Must be a USN with a SECRET security clearance and a FAA certified Air Traffic Controller with at least 4 or more years’ experience.
  • Must have an Active Secret US Government Clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to maintain a Secret Clearance.
  • Possess required knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively promote air traffic system safety in compliance with established Air Force, FAA, ICAO or NATO criterion.
  • Must pass annual Class II physical by FAA certified examiner IAW Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and AFMAN 13-204 Vol 3.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and make effective decisions. 
  • Solid communications skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ability to work as a member of a diverse, dynamic team.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and sound judgment.  
  • Possess a valid state issued driver’s license and passport. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a Secret Clearance.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain requirements for duration of deployment.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

  • A normal shift for ATC personnel is 8 hours, not to exceed 10 hours IAW DAFMAN 13-204v3 Para. 4.5.2.1.
  • The Traffic Controller shall be located at Ascension Island.
  • Living and working conditions at the assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable. 
  • Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions.
  • Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions. 
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
