This position repairs, rebuilds, maintains and inspects helicopter and fixed wing airframes, engines, props, rotors and equipment to meet agency operations, transportation, and reconnaissance to meet federal, state and agency regulations. Designs, manufactures and installs specialized parts and equipment. Under direction of the Aircraft Mechanic Supervisor (AMS).

Job Requirements:
Key Knowledge and Skills:
  • Inspect, diagnose, adjust, maintains, repairs, aircraft utilizing hand, power and specialty tools. Climbs, bends and crawls to perform inspections and audient troubleshooting.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds of weight and move it a distance of 30 feet.
  • Ability to work from tall ladders, work stands and in high places.
  • Correctable vision to 20-20.High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess and maintain FAA Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) certificate- Airframe Power Plant (A&P) endorsed.
  • Must have actively held an FAA AMT certificate rated Airframe, & Powerplant (A&P) for 2 years.
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough working knowledge on maintenance documentation and records management.
  • Thorough working knowledge on aviation components.
  • Ability to remain calm under stress.
  • Leadership-the ability to recognize and correct flight related issues with department pilots.

  • Additional aviation credentials, licenses, certificates or schools.
  • Current FAA Inspection Authorized (IA): Required for field maintenance.
  • Certificate Experience on our exact type of aircraft is desired such as the UH1 Huey helicopter 10 years' experience as an AMT and 3 of the last 10 years, as a helicopter mechanic (AMT/A&P)
  • Ability to work closely with fire Aviation Program Manager, Aviation Maintenance Supervisor, Aircraft Mechanic Inspector Lead, helicopter coordinator, pilot staff, mechanics, Helitack members and all other agency personnel as required.
  • Able to function as a professional in the company of our interagency partners such as but not limited to: FAA, USFS, DOI, BLM, BIA, NPS, NOAA, USFW and local city , county, state and federal governments.
  • Experience as an aircraft electrician, sheet-, metal specialist, engine technician for the Lycoming T53.Able to use a computer, working with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Work Setting: This is principally located at the Olympia airport. DNR has a hangar, however some of the work maybe oriented outdoors. The person in this position will be exposed to hazardous conditions involving/operating around moving equipment and lifting/moving of heavy parts. Climbs, bends and crawls to perform inspections and audient troubleshooting. The position requires working in noisy conditions around running and moving aircraft, sometimes around hazardous chemical vapors and high voltage. At certain times the position is required to work late hours, on weekends and at remote outdoor locations several hundred miles from Olympia.
  • Work Schedule: Generally, forty hours a week utilizing the 4 x 10 schedule (Mon.-Thur.). However, this position requires frequent seasonal overtime related to fire suppression activities to include Fridays and weekends.
  • Travel Requirements: Technician may be required to travel via air or land to various job sites located statewide for up to a week at a time during the fire season. May be required to attend classes and departmental meetings. Sometimes out of state.
  • Equipment Used: Specialized tools and equipment will be provided; but the employee will be required to provide his/her own hand tools. Motorized equipment such as forklifts, fuel trucks, and tugs may take extra training and will be provided on an as needed basis.
  • Hazardous Materials: A wide range of lubricants, solvents, aerosols, paints, epoxies, fuels and cleaning compounds, Helicopter operations involve exposure to Wildland fire smoke and aviation fuels. Works safely in an environment with running and moving aircraft, hazardous chemicals, extreme high noise, high and low material temperatures, high/low fluid and gas pressures and temperatures. (Hydraulic, pneumatic and nitrogen) Work with high voltages. Work around unprotected moving components (props, jet blast, jet intakes and rotor blades).
  • Customers: DNR aviation management, Helicopter Coordinator, Helicopter Managers, DNR Pilots and Helitack.
